If you have a Nikon, you can find out very easily what the shutter Actuation Count is [the total number of times the shutter has been pressed over the life of the camera].

Only in RAW file:

1] Open in Bridge
2] Menu Bar File/File Info... [Ctrl/Cmd I - 'eye' ]
3] Go to 'Advanced' TAB
4] Expand the 'Schema' folder
5] Look at 'aux:ImageNumber: line

You will see the total number of times it has been fired over the life of the camera.

This does not work in Canon, the number will be 0
