October’s first number of workshops were two dates in Philadelphia and then a workshop in DC. As with the other workshops on flash photography, the focus was on getting the best results from (mainly) our on-camera speedlights in various scenarios, whether …
for a simple headshot, approximating short lighting such as we’d get in the studio, or …

.
… finding interesting backdrops of the city at night, and figuring out ways to bounce flash off other surfaces.

.
It is always interesting to find all kinds of lighting challenges in the various venues where the workshops are held. In this instance, an exercise in balancing bounced flash indoors, against a brighter outdoors scene .. while not getting your own or your flash’s reflection in the window.

.
Here are some images from the afternoon session where we also worked with manual flash using softboxes. (Images courtesy of Russ Meseroll.)

Thank you to everyone who attended and also our models.

Hi Neil,
Lovely models and very excellent images. Forgive my ignorance but what power supply are you using for your stobes? As usual, thanks for sharing. I only wish I can attend your classes. Regards and all the best to you.

Just wanted to drop another note of thanks for the workshop last month. I had my first wedding since your workshop and put a couple things into practice and the results were great. The main thing I was using was bouncing the flash into the reflector…worked brilliantly for several formal images as the sky grew dark very quick and the light sucked. Also use the black foam a lot more and bounced it like crazy with the “where would I put the softbox” mentality.

Hi Neil,
You’re site incredibly informative. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Just curious, what setup do you have there for the monopod+softbox combo. I’m very interested in setting something similar with my 580s.

What is that you’re holding in your hand?! Is that a meter? But you shoot digital, why do you need that?!?!
Just kidding. I have one too. It’s fantastic!
