With WPPI coming up soon, I have had a number of people ask about individual workshops and tutoring sessions. Instead of trying to co-ordinate all this around everyone’s crazy schedules, I’ve decided it would be easier to announce a series of mini-workshops.

Las Vegas mini-workshop: on-location flash photography
There will be 3 workshops; each will be 4 hrs long.
- Saturday, Feb 19, 2-6pm-
Monday, Feb 21, 1-5pm-
Tuesday, Feb 22, 1-5pm
The mini-workshops will be limited to only 3 people at a time. Definitely un-crowded! Therefore these mini-workshops will be closer to being individual tutoring sessions.
Fee: $250 payable by Paypal.

There will be a model, and I’ll provide the softbox and reflector and pocket-wizards.
You only need to bring:
- a camera. Nikon or Canon. Doesn’t matter.
- a speedlight (and battery pack if possible).
- and a few lenses. 24-70mm is good; 70-200mm f2.8 is even better.
The format of the mini-workshop:
We’ll start off by going over some of the essentials we need to know. This will be about an hour of ‘seminar’, and then we hit the Strip with a model and a softbox. We’ll work with available light; bounce flash and off-camera flash. We’ll also cover other aspects such as posing and working with a model. An intensive fun 4 hours of learning and shooting.
Contact me via email to book, or for more details.

post workshop feedback:
As usual, several blog posts resulted from material covered in these mini-workshops:
- direction of light … any light
- video light vs bounce flash
- photo sessions – Shawna

I’d be careful in Vegas if I were you, they are very strict about their policies on photo shoots, even if its not for commercial purposes, if they even see you break out a soft box on the strip they will swarm, any professional gear in their eyes is considered a professional shoot and thus requires a permit.

Not True except in casinos, not true outdoors

Neil, on your out door shoots do you use a tripod ? It seems that pictures of them seem to show that none are used. Then one has to be concerned about the use of soft boxes ( being used more often ) and any permit requirements
Kicking myself for not being able to attend the WPPI this winter and especially missing your mini workshops. I shall be in Florida attending a Rolando Gomez workshop. I really hope you will be back at WPPI next year and repeat the mini workshops. I will plan my vacation around it.
Looking foward to your full report on the newly released Pocket Wizzard inits (3) for Nikon….Ron

Hey Neil!
I own Exposure Photography here in Las Vegas and shoot at the strip all the time.here is what you need to know. You will more than likely not be able to use anything but your cameras in any of the casinos. They don’t like soft boxes or tripods due to the liability issues. Also some casinos are snobs about copyright issues from shooting images on their property. Hiwerver, you can shoot in the fronts of the casinos to your hearts content.
Places like Fremont street are a great place to shoot but about 50% of the time I get confronted by security when using soft boxes and lighting. The Fremont Street Experience is actually a venue…so they will sometimes gripe.
That being said, there are plenty of other places to shoot. The arts district is great and no one will bother you. If in fact anyone bothers you, just say you are photography students. Works for me every time!
Also, I shoot Sony, would it be beneficial for me to sign up for your workshop? I have my own triggers and ezbox.
Either way, have a great time!

Neil,
It pains me to see all these announcements about sessions in places that I don’t live. When are you going to grace us Canadians (more specifically, Torontonians) with your presence? I’ll be the first one to sign up, sit in the front row, and will be the one to say “ooh, ooh….Mr. Niekirk! Mr. Niekirk!”.
Compelling argument, if I do say so myself

And an amendment to my previous post, my sales pitch also included forgetting to put the “van” in your last name.
Damn….blew that one.

Neil, I am visiting from Kitimat, BC, Canada, and I only have a couple of days and I was wondering if I could attend your February 19 class? Unfortunately, I am leaving on the 22nd and have another commitment on the 21st.
Regards,
Brenda

Neil,
Do you see yourself doing another series of mini-workshops while in town for WPPI 2012?
