individual photography workshop – on-location lighting

Photographers who would like what is offered with the flash photography workshops, but would like to have an individual workshop, can now do so. We will cover similar ground as with the full-day workshop. But it is an individual session. Just you and me; an assistant and a model.

There are two options here, with some differences in the logistics and the fees.
We can have the individual workshop either in Manhattan, NY or in Hoboken, NJ.

Individual workshop  -  New Jersey  -  $1,200

The fee:  $1200 for the day, including the model and an assistant helping us.
If you’d like to double up with a friend, then the fee is $750 each.

I will require a non-refundable deposit of $500 when you book the day.
Should you cancel, $300 can be re-applied to another date.

Time:  10am to 6pm
The day will start at 10am at my studio in Little Falls, NJ. During the first part of this workshop, we’ll go over the theory and we’ll discuss the techniques and the stuff-we-need-to-know. Since this workshop will start in my studio, we can also delve into studio lighting techniques. 

For the afternoon session (after lunch), we can either continue working in and around the studio with a model, or, if you want, we can drive in to Hoboken to meet up with our model at around 1:30pm. She will be an experienced model, and my assistant will be there to help carry lighting equipment and hold any lights. But we’ll be traveling light.

The part of the workshop that takes place on location, will be focused on the use of off-camera flash. The workshop ends at 6pm.

She will be an experienced model, and my assistant will be there to help carry lighting equipment and hold any lights.  But we’ll be traveling light.

Then around 1pm we’ll drive to the Meat-Packing Disctrict with our model. The rest of the workshop will be on location and will be focused on the use of off-camera flash. The workshop ends at 6pm.

Somewhere between 1pm and 2pm we’ll break for lunch, included in the workshop fee.

Through the course of the day, we’ll explore different lighting scenarios, and I’ll answer all questions.  As always, we’ll be after those aha! moments when things fall into place for you.

* TTL / Auto flash .. vs .. manual flash
* Exposure metering for ambient light
* Implications of flash sync speed
* Adding fill-flash to available light outdoors
* Directional bounce flash
* Flash modifiers – uses & limitations
* Dragging the shutter
* Tungsten light & flash
* metering for ambient light and fill flash
* using TTL flash and manual flash
* Wireless TTL flash
* Using off-camera flash and a softbox / creating a small studio set-up.

A certain level of fundamental technical knowledge is required for the sessions to be successful.
For example, a photographer should already know:

• the basic operation and controls of his or her camera,
• how to read the camera’s built in metering display,
• the basic relationship of aperture / shutter speed / ISO, and
• how to manually adjust those settings.
