Background lights

Okay, I'll ask here. Don't want to step on sbcampbe Post. How do you use a colored light or gel on a flash or strobe on a backround so it shows up? Wouldn't the Key or Fill lights overpower it? It's easy if you're using abient light only and light up your background, no brainer, I'm only asking because I like the idea and not quite sure how it's accomplished.

Inverse Square Law to the rescue ... move your main light closer to your subject, and then the background goes darker .... and in this case, is lit mainly by the light with the colored gel.
