broad/short lighting

Hi all! I'm trying to practice broad and short lighting w/ my bounce flash. I'm having trouble w/ fluid control over handeling my camera and maneuvering my flash head. I'm reading Neil's on camera flash book and referring to pg 78 and his model.

This is what I'm trying to achieve (vertical shot-not moving subject-bouncing to right) and I can't seem to get the short lighting w/o being clumbsy w/ my camera. Any tips would be appreciated. I'd love to finesses looks like this. I saw Neil quickly demonstrate this at a seminar and he makes it look so easy.
