- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2016It's a good device especially for the money and price point. I was nervous to buy this from the amazon warehouse used for a lower price. The Osmo came packed in original shipping box well packaged. It's clean with no markings and the device works. The only issue I've had/have sometimes is an error message "Invalid SD Card" I'm using a 64 gb sdhx card and I'm not sure if that could be it. But lately the message haven't been coming up. I shoot weddings as a Cinematographer and it gives me those stable shots like a DJ Ronin even thought it's not that. My only issue is that it doesn't work well in low or dim light even though I knew that before buying it. So don't set your ISO over 800 no matter what because it will look grainy. I don't go over 800 ISO and 60 shutter speed in low light situations. In those cases I try to use LED lights to light it up depending on what I'm looking for. The wifi doesn't drop like some have stated. I've heard some bad stuff about it and I always read reviews and do my research before buying anything. This was a great buy and this will fit the person who want's to youtube and start vlogs, weddings, church videos, promo videos, documentaires, or just take it on vacation. It takes awesome photos and my wife uses it sometimes. You don't have to be a pro to use this product. I believe you won't find a product this affordable with this amount of features. If it was a beast in low light then is thing would be a monster but I'm still giving this 5 stars because I know the flaws it has and outside of that it works as stated.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2016Summer 2016 Review - latest Firmware
I really didn't like it at first; I came SO close to returning it, but it grew on me as I learned a few tricks.
The two biggest issues for me are the Smartphone interface and its 20mm lens and 1+ meter minimum focus distance. It has other issues as well but I've also found solutions.
THE LENS PROBLEM
Combine a wide angle lens with a pretty far minimum focus distance there are just a lot of shots you can't take, or at least can't take well. At first I found it pretty useless for product videos; instructional videos, interviews, because you can't get tight enough or even fill the frame properly. The lens also has a noticeable amount of fisheye distortion up close. The X3 camera also has a very flat depth of field making the footage less interesting than I hoped.
Solution: If 1080p is acceptable for you, the DJI OSMO has pretty good digital zoom. Just make sure your at least 1 meter away from your subject and you can go up to about 1.4x without any significant loss of quality.
Outdoors you'll also need a Neutral Density filter to keep frame rates low and smooth. (I shoot at 1/50th second shutter) Unfortunately DJI decided to go with an absurd 35.8mm lens thread rather than the standard 37mm so you'll need proprietary filters. They make no screw-on macro lenses (which would really help) at this proprietary size.
Overall the video is pretty highly compressed but looks pretty good outdoors when shooting in manual. The OSMO uses a small sensor so like most small sensor cameras, it has a significant quality drop indoors or in low light.
THE PHONE PROBLEM
The app is actually a lot less buggy now than earlier users reported (I'm on Android with a modern phone, LG G4), but it still crashes almost everytime I start it up. Open the app again and it usually works.
Using a phone to frame shoots less than ideal. The fact is that these phones just aren't designed for use outdoors as a video monitor. They are too dim and have highly reflective, finger oil gathering screens. Plus I need my phone for other things and I don't want it's battery dead at the end of a shoot.
That said, DJI should really sell their universal phone mount on its own for car & bike attachment - it's the best I've ever seen. Fantastic and clever engineering. It is very heavy though compared to the OSMO and kind of awkward since its way out to one side.
SOLUTION: With a bit of practice I've been able to shoot with no phone. I use the phone at first to configure the camera, then turn it off and put it back in my pocket. It actually works surprisingly well. The OSMO points easily like a flashlight so if you don't need precise framing of the shot this is the way to go.
Alternatively, I've also used the Osmo in my right hand, while keeping my phone in my left not attached. This allows me to adjust the angle camera independently from the angel of the phone which works really well.
HORIZON LEVEL GLITCH
OSMO looses the horizon often while filming and develops a significant tilt. You can go into settings and manually or automatically calibrate the horizon. But that doesn't fix it for long, you'll have to repeat this again and again.
It's got other little issues as well, just seems to have a mind of its own sometimes.
SOUND
As other reviewers have mentioned the sound is atrocious; not even good enough for a scratch track. I don't really consider this a problem though because it has an audio jack and even just a $4 plug in mic can be used for vastly improved audio. I use a RODE VideoMicro and the OSMO 360 mount which provides fantastic sound.
Other Issues
It needs an integrated tripod mount. OSMO rosette is the only mounting point for anything, and while it has a standard 1/4 screw , its recessed into the grip you can't really screw in anything larger than DJIs proprietary accessories, at least not well.
The case it comes with is well made and cool, but has no room for the MUST HAVE accessories (microphone, mount, charger, and spare batteries, so its unfortunately it's kind of useless. It also opens from the bottom instead of the top which is a poor design choice.
HUGE loss of quality when doing time lapse; I have no idea why it can’t take a decent photo once every 2 seconds but it’s cant. The OSMO cuts the resolution down to just 720p and piles on the compression.
Very poor time lapse performance.
Significant loss of quality plus cropping when shooting 1080p 120fps. Works a bit better at low ISO, but certainly not quality 1080p.
Conclusion
I suspect that their X5 camera and a couple lenses would make this a far more versatile tool. But that's another $2000, and the OSMO platform is just isn't refined enough to invest that kind of money in right now. At that price it just needs to work. No phone, no gimmicks, or bugs, just pick it up and shoot.
But for what it does do: decent quality, wide angle, stabilized HD video, there is no better value. It still has a way to go though; and a lot of advertised features down really come through. If your planing to use it professionally, I'd suggest waiting until version 2.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2016I like this product. It has everything I was looking for in camera.
As a starting point, for non-proffecional video makers, it's perfect.
Amazing camera with great stabilization! Compact, Nice looking, Good ethereal quality. Although it has few annoying bugs on software side.
I would give 5 stars if not many annoying small bugs all around.
Good thing is that most of them are on Software side, so I hope to see those fixed.
Smoothness of video is just amazing!
Battery life is another thing everyone should think twice about, before you buy this camera:
When you buy DSLR camera, it can be in stand by mode for days probably, because it’s not require that many energy, it uses energy to make a shot. InOSMOs case it uses most energy to make image smoother, it does this all the time, even if you are not shooting video. So you may see that even in stand by mode it last for 1.5 hour on full battery. You have to get used to use “Sleep Mode” more often, when you don’t shoot video. And, of course, buy at least one additional battery.
Additional info, If engineers from DJI are reading this:
few most annoying issues:
- Very often, especially when I'm outside in parks or in city, I keep loosing wi-fi connection 10-20 seconds after I start shooting the video. And what I see is: app loosing connections, Camera is keep showing video (red LED is flashing), but since I've lost connections with the phone, I can't scontrol gimble (I usually do it from the phone, cause joystick is not smooth enough). After few seconds wi-fi connection is recovered, but at this point it looks like you take mobile apps state as sourse of truth. So camera says "we are recording video", mobile app says "Nope! We don't" and camera stop recording. I end up with all my videos are incomplete and has 2-3 frozen seconds in the end. And I can’t shoot videos longer than 1-2 min. Please fix this. This is super annoying. I hope it’s not defect on wi-fi chip in camera.
I am using iPhone 5s and iPhone 6s with latest iOS 9.2/9.3. Issue is reproducible on both configurations.
I’m ready to provide logs or any other info that might be helpful, please feel free to reach me out on my email (danilin003@gmail.com)
This issue is making camera almost useless for me, But I really like this camera, so I would like to help you (if I can) to improve it and polish it, so it will be the best on a market.
Another annoying thing is with transferring photos/videos to phones storage. I still don’t understand why is this happening in 2 stages. And in 80% of cases I’m not able to access library from the phone (when I tap on icon on the left bottom corner). I just wait and after ~2 min of waiting ‘m giving up.

This camera is everything. I was tired of not being able to stabilize my GoPro so I went with this as soon as it was released. The product is amazing and would recommend the company for any amateur who enjoys putting together videos.

Excellent and stable camera both on Video and still pictures. However, the audio is horrible. They should include in the package an external microphone free instead of asking user to order it as extra

3.0 out of 5 stars Sobre valorado

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value
I saved money by buying a used unit. I quickly discovered that the battery was toast. Maybe that why I got it so cheap. I tossed in a new battery and it works perfectly. I feel like I won a lottery.
