Unlike some of the other reviews, I've had no issues with the battery popping out. It's a good light... when it works. I use it for light painting the exterior of homes.
The light was slightly over a year old (one month past the warranty expiration) when, during a twilight shoot of a home, it shut down on me repeatedly. When I contacted Lowel they initially told me I would have to pay for a repair. I only used it a couple of times since my initial purchase. After I complained they agreed to fix it under the warranty.
The told me I needed to charge the battery monthly whether I used it or not. Well I did as they say and lo and behold the other night I used it for the first time since the repair and it shut down on me again.
For me this light is way to unreliable and would not recommend it. When it works, it's great but unfortunately it has some design flaws that makes it useless.
Great concept, poorly executed. I've had two of these, its a frustrating piece of kit. I use it all the time for light painting interiors and exteriors, the results are great, lovely soft adjustable light and you can just screw a 80B to it for natural light. The problem is, it just does not feel like a professional piece of kit. The plastic battery enclosure is badly designed, I have to tape it to stop the battery popping out. I leave it on its side when I'm not using it because its top heavy and can fall over and break if you don't place it upright carefully. Doesn't fit snugly into a camera bag and for its size you would expect more power. I'm confused as to why there is nothing else on the market to compare this too? Maybe thats why its so expensive....Its great for video too, the light is soft enough to light a person with no diffusion. Needs an upgrade: more power, better build, longer battery life, and weather proofing. Now that would be worth the price tag.
I really love this light. The battery is a bit heavy for the door so it pops off easily. I have to keep tape on it to keep it in, but other than that, I've really loved it. I use it for video and photo and the portability and versatility is amazing. It's intensely warm, but I like warm images. In daylight it definitely goes very warm and unless you want that look, you'll want a balancing filter. It's more powerful than the IceLights, but the light isn't quite as soft without diffusion. I like that you can pop it up into an umbrella or whatever if you don't want the intensely round shape it creates. Really, it's a great light. I feel like I've been waiting for a product like this for a long time. The snoot is a dream come true. It is so precise and you can snoot it down to just hit the face of your subject or whatever. I can't speak more highly of it. As far as LED/hot lights go, it's the best out there right now.
The light is wonderful and incredibly easy to use but the build quality leaves a lot to be desired. It's shaped like a power drill, so one would imagine it borrows functional details like a locking battery with a charging dock. Alas, it has neither of these. The only thing holding the battery in are two little clips and friction. Any slight movement or shake will loosen the battery to the point where it loses its connection or it will simply slide right out. I would hope that for $700, the build quality would be rock solid. Unfortunately, it isn't so. I wish there was a competitor that makes an equivalent product with better build quality, but currently, this isn't so. Lowel fills a much needed gap in lighting options, and they should truly step up their quality control and their design. Also, with the improvement in LED technology, there is no reason this light needs to be so honking huge. The design makes it difficult to mount on a light stand or incorporate it with any booms or adapters. The 1/4-20 thread on the bottom doesn't instill much confidence, especially seeing how poorly the battery is constructed. I would not trust this mounted high on a stand. If you must have this light, be sure to tape that battery door shut. This is a common complaint for this light and I just don't understand why after all these years of manufacturing, the design has not been corrected. There is no excuse for bad quality control at this price point.
If this was a robustly built light that was reliable and had a decent battery, it would be a game changer.
Unfortunately:
- the battery is easily killed (as in permanently by lack of activity) - the housing is built cheaply and is fragile - The plastic clips holding the battery can actually break under the weight of the battery itself - The battery sits loosely in the housing creating problems - fan noise for those who need video with sound (for me - not an issue as I'm a photographer) - Lowel offer pretty poor customer service as a whole
It could have been amazing. Instead, it is, for the price, incredibly poor value.
Its only advantage is that there are few alternatives on the market for this kind of light. If there were, it would have been dead, quite some time ago.
The best video light in the market .it can spray up to 30 feet ,there is nothing on the market . The ice light can only go 5 feet then it's useless .the Lowel GL1 is not cheap because it will do everything you want in a LED .Save up your money ,this product will last you a life time.
