- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2022This is the 2nd version of the 200-400 f4. The 1st gen I tested (used) autofocus AF wasn't as good, but image quality (IQ) was the same. Nikon newer 3rd gen/ version is 18-400 f4 with TC built in. Yes I got mine used.
Positives:
1. price, new or used it is so much cheaper than all these new lenses at the longer focal length and larger aperture.
2. IQ is great. I have the old 80-400mm variable aperture one. That lens isn't as sharp. This lens isn't a prime so it isn't that level of sharpen, but is great.
3. built quality, lost of metal and you can feel it.
4. AF is good, but it for tracking on the nikon z6 with ftz adapter for BIF, maybe not this combo..
negative:
-so heavy, I have it on my back carrying it for a few bird trail and i was wiped, haha.
Overall with the used price i am happy with the image quality, just if it wasn't so big and heavy I would use it more. Mine had a lens filter and the carrying sling case was nice,
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2012I have had this lens now for about 4 weeks. I use it for wild life photography in Rocky mountains.
I also use the Nikon 80-200, 80-400 and Sigma 50-500. This lens is as sharp as the 80-200 but with much better reach.
First and foremost the lens dose what Nikon claim it dose.
Here are some things to think about if your considering this lens.
This is a large and very heavy lens. and it gets heaver as the day goes by.
You can hand hold this lens because the VR II is vey effective, however for the best results you really need a good tripod and head. A Gimbal head would be best.
The VR II is very noisy and spooks the birds if you are close to them.
The lens comes with a way over done and large carrying case. It is almost like a back pack. It can be used to ship the lens and I am sure it would work fine. But it is too lager to be practical for every day use unless you work or use it out of your car.
There is a great deal of third party accessory for this lens, replacement foot, lens coat , protective case and hoods, etc. You will need some sort of practical protective case for filed use.
If you use this lens with Nikon's new cameras, D800, or D4, you will be rewarded with the ability to Auto focus at F8. This means you can use all Nikon AFS tele-convertors on this lens and be able to auto focus. This is a big deal since it gives you an 800mm F8 lens with auto focus if you use a Nikon TC-20E III tele-convertor.
I have used the TC-20E and TC-14E Both on the lens and have not notice Image degradation using RRS TC33 Tripods and Gimbal head. I am sure there is a bit of degradation but since I am no Moose Peterson I can't tell. Since all my images has some sort of degradation for other reasons than the use of Tele-convertors anyway. Your experience may vary.
The auto focus on the lens is faster than all the above lenses I mentioned, and stays fast even with the TC-20E.
One last word, Do not dismiss the size and weight issue. It is a real issue if you are going to cary this lens around all day hiking or sports shooting.
Traveling with this lens is also a challenge. You have to develop strategies around carrying this along with all other lenses and camera bodies through airports and deal with flight attendants who want you to check your bag with your all your gear and the $6000.00 lens in it.
I hope this help you, It is hard to justify spending the money on this lens but I have not regret it at all. Just wish I had done it sooner.
Update 4/10/2013:
Since I have used the lens for sometimes now, I thought I would share my experience:
As I mentioned in my original review I have been using the lens with TC14 and TC20. The images from TC20 at longer distances and wider f stops are much softer and more importantly, I experienced a lot of focusing issues not so much with speed as I am with accuracy, significant back focusing at longer distances (I am using D800). I have examined my technique and tested the combination at controlled environment, but no deference in performance, I also have a Nikon 300, 2.8. The TC20 performs much better with 300, 2.8.
So even though the TC20 is usable, I would not recommend using TC20 with this lens for moving subjects, like Birding or Sports shooting. Since I had issues with TC20, I purchased a TC17. I have to say that TC17 is not much better. On the other hand the TC14 has been a great combination and no issues at all.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2014Great flexibility and good weight for what it is but I don't think it is sharp enough based on the fact that it is a professional level lens. In my opinion the 300 2.8 is a better option. Even with the 1.4 teleconverter it seems sharper and the autofocus while fast on the 200-400 isn't up to the 300's speed. If you are going to use the lens I didn't think it worked that well at f4 and needs to be stopped down to ideally 6.3 or higher to get good results
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2011I mostly shoot birds and this lens is perfect for shooting birds in flight. My other long lens is a 400 f/2.8 which is too heavy to hand hold, The 200-400 gives me much better flexibility while being not to heavy. I normally use it with a 1.4 tele-converter and that gives me a very workable 580. It is extremely fast to focus either with or without the TC and works very well for birds in flight. Image quality is almost as good as the 400 f/2.8 especially on close subjects, say up to 100 Yards. The VRII allows hand held shots down to about a 250th of a second and slower if I can brace against something when shooting.
I have gotten some fantastic shots with it that I would have missed with the larger lens because of the time required to set up a tripod. The lens is very sharp and easy to use it also provides some interesting features such as memory focus that is excellent for shooting birds coming and going from a nest or other set spot.
I normally carry it with a Black Rapid R-strap and find this allows easy carrying and use.
Overall I am extremely satisfied with this lens. It has become my main wildlife lens.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2011This was a lens that I had decided to purchase for a long time after several recommendations from other photographers. It is fast glass! Accepts Nikon teleconverters (current series only) and has a built in filter holder. Holder is same size as the 600 mm lens one and therefore you can interchange filters, including the circular polarizer. It is large and heavy but reasonable sharpness obtained with fast speeds when handheld and with VRII turned on. Great sharpness when utilizing a sturdy tripod/bullhead/gimbal and also when utilizing a rifle stock (Bush Hawk)! The case is good and protects lens AND camera (Nikon D3).
I am very happy with it at this point!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great tele lens optics, but too heavy to carry around
The quality of the photos and the telefocal optics are excellent, but it’s quite heavy, so will be very tiring carrying it around. Will need a tripod to steady it as well. I guess it’s really intended for professionals rather than an amateur like myself
