1\/300th @ f2 @ 125 ISO<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #999999;\">[ click on the photo to see a larger image]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Canon recently upgraded their legendary\u00a0200mm f1.8 with an 200mm f2 version which has Image Stabilization.\u00a0 So out of curiosity I rented this lens from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lensprotogo.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">LensProToGo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, to play with it and test it out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here is the beast of a lens:\u00a0 the <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/542292-REG\/Canon_2297B002_Telephoto_EF_200mm_f_2L.html\/BI\/2096\/KBID\/2822\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canon 200mm f2 L IS USM<\/a> <\/strong>(B&amp;H)<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/542292-REG\/Canon_2297B002_Telephoto_EF_200mm_f_2L.html\/BI\/2096\/KBID\/2822\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/images\/largeimages\/542292.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is the kind of lens which is best used (or in a way ONLY to be used) at its maximum aperture.\u00a0 That wide aperture of f2 gives you an incredibly thin depth of field, and hence, that dreamy background.\u00a0 This of course wouldn&#8217;t mean much if the lens itself wasn&#8217;t\u00a0crisply sharp at f2 &#8230; and in fact, on checking my images at 100%, this lens proved itself to be count-the-eyelashes sharp at that wide aperture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/canon-200mm-f2\/3NVN2710.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/canon-200mm-f2\/3NVN2738.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My patient model was Jackie, a New York based photographer.<\/p>\n<p>The images here haven&#8217;t received any Photoshop treatment, but in making the RAW-to-JPG conversion in Canon&#8217;s DPP software, I bumped up the\u00a0saturation and contrast a touch.<\/p>\n<p>The soft natural light here was augmented by an off-camera Quantum T5D-R with the Quantum wireless TTL flash system,\u00a0connected to the camera as\u00a0described in <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/travelling-light-in-vegas\/\">this previous post<\/a>.\u00a0 The Q-flash was diffused with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/62245-REG\/Westcott_2334_Apollo_Mono_Softbox_with.html\/BI\/2096\/KBID\/2822\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Westcott Apollo Softbox<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/canon-200mm-f2\/3NVN2849.jpg\">Click here for a\u00a0pull-back shot to show the position of the Q-flash and softbox<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\nSo let&#8217;s look at the effect this wide an aperture has on the out-of-focus area.<br \/>\n(Now keep in mind that in reducing the image for web display, a lot of info is lost, and you simply won&#8217;t see the full effect.)<\/p>\n<p>top image with the 200mm f2 @ f2 <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">..<\/span> <span style=\"color: #999999;\">[ click on the photos to see larger images]<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">bottom image with the 200mm f2 @ f4 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/canon-200mm-f2\/3NVN2839_200_f2_900.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/canon-200mm-f2\/3NVN2839_200_f2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/canon-200mm-f2\/3NVN2841_200_f4_900.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/canon-200mm-f2\/3NVN2841_200_f4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That background just looks so dreamy smooth with this lens wide open.<br \/>\nIn checking the 70-200mm f2.8 IS zoom at f4 against the 200mm f2 @ f4, I couldn&#8217;t really discern any difference in how the background was rendered.<br \/>\nThe bokeh of both lenses appear similar when compared at f2.8 and\u00a0f4.<br \/>\n(I didn&#8217;t bother to check the 200mm f2 at f5.6 .. because there is no way that you would spend $5400 and then use this lens at f5.6 )<\/p>\n<p>As I&#8217;ve mentioned already, this lens is sharp!\u00a0 And in comparison to a number of images, I&#8217;d say it is sharper at f2 than my 70-200mm f2.8 IS zoom is at f4.\u00a0\u00a0 Yes,\u00a0even stopped down to an aperture where I am happy enough with the zoom lens&#8217; sharpness, it doesn&#8217;t match the 200mm f2 wide open.<\/p>\n<p>To say I want one of these lenses, is an understatement.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 1px;\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/icons\/divider.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"1\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[ edited to add more photos &#8211;\u00a0July 31, 2008 ]<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m still having a love affair with this lens.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday evening Jackie and I went in to New York, specifically Times Square.\u00a0 I took some available light portraits of Jackie right there in the middle of Times Square, using the neon billboards as backdrops. \u00a0Now, the light here on her\u00a0is entirely from the numerous neon lights and billboards.\u00a0 (This image is pretty much straight out of camera, with only the WB touched up in RAW.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/canon-200mm-f2\/Jackie-P_nyc_105-900.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/canon-200mm-f2\/Jackie-P_nyc_105.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Canon 1D Mark III &#8211;
