{"id":148,"date":"2008-08-21T03:29:03","date_gmt":"2008-08-21T08:29:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/planetneil.com\/tangents\/?p=190"},"modified":"2017-08-12T13:29:41","modified_gmt":"2017-08-12T17:29:41","slug":"review-nikon-sb-900-speedlight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/review-nikon-sb-900-speedlight\/","title":{"rendered":"review: Nikon SB-900 speedlight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/nikon\/SB-900_a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>review: Nikon SB-900 speedlight<\/h1>\n<p>With the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/570338-USA\/Nikon_4807_SB_900_Speedlight_i_TTL_Shoe.html\/BI\/2096\/KBID\/2822\" target=\"_blank\">SB-900 Speedlight<\/a><\/strong> (B&amp;H), Nikon&#8217;s\u00a0flagship flashgun, it is clear that\u00a0they\u00a0did their homework.\u00a0\u00a0The SB-800 was a great flashgun, but there were certain things about it that were very frustrating, but the\u00a0<strong>Nikon\u00a0SB-900<\/strong> gets all of this right.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A huge improvement is that the SB-900 rotates 180&#8242; to either side!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Right there in this image is the main reason to get the SB-900 &#8230; it now\u00a0rotates 180&#8242; to the right, instead of stopping short at the 90&#8242; mark like the SB-800. This is a huge benefit in bouncing flash with specific effect in mind.<\/p>\n<p>That the\u00a0SB-800 stopped short at the 90&#8242; mark when you rotated the flash-head to the right, was a huge downside for me in comparing the SB-800 to the Canon 580EX.<\/p>\n<p>But there are more reasons to love the SB-900 &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/nikon\/SB-900_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Accessing the CLS functions are now just a flip of a switch away.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For anyone familiar with the slooooow method of getting to the Nikon&#8217;s CLS system of the SB-800 by pressing buttons for several seconds to call up various menus to get into the\u00a0Master \/ Remote settings, will love the ease with which the\u00a0Wireless TTL control menu\u00a0can now be accessed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The entire menu system is now easier to access and to navigate.<\/li>\n<li>The LCD display itself is larger and the menu system is self-apparent.\u00a0 The menu really is obvious now, and easily accessed.\u00a0\u00a0 You can even set &#8220;My Menu&#8221; on this flashgun.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/nikon\/SB-900_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/icons\/divider-51.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For me,\u00a0these differences are profound enough to make the SB-900 an automatic upgrade over the SB-800.<br \/>\nThe <strong>build quality<\/strong> of the SB-900 also appears to be a step up from the SB-800.\u00a0 Not only is the SB-900 much larger than the SB-800, it also feels more solid.\u00a0 While some may argue that the SB-900 is too bulky, the extra size of the SB-900\u00a0may have been a side-effect of several improvements by the SB-900, such as:<br \/>\n&#8211; \u00a0building the flash-head to rotate like it does,<br \/>\n&#8211; and the fact that the SB-900 offers a little more power than the SB-800,<br \/>\n&#8211; the larger LCD display.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/icons\/divider-51.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are <strong>other smaller touches<\/strong> as well:<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 The filter set now comes with a clip-on holder.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 There is now a <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/nikon-sb-900-thermal-cut-out\/\"><strong>thermal cut-off<\/strong><\/a> for the flash to stop it from over-heating. Fortunately this can be disabled.\u00a0 (Quite often I need to get the shots, without much\u00a0concern for my flashgun.)\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/nikon-sb-900-thermal-cut-out\/\">I do have a quibble with the way it is implemented though<\/a>.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 You can set the illumination pattern.\u00a0 ie, how much light fall-off there are to the edges of the image taken with the SB-900.\u00a0 But this is a trivial point for anyone who favours bounce flash over direct flash.<\/p>\n<p>There is very little to quibble about with the <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/nikon-sb-910-speedlight\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nikon SB-900<\/a> (B&amp;H), and I would definitely recommend it as the best flashgun out there.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/icons\/divider-51.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As an aside, we can look at the Canon 580EX II as to how a designer can completely miss the mark in updating\u00a0a piece of equipment:<br \/>\n&#8211; The 580EX II made the controls to access Master \/ Slave far more clumsy over the original 580EX.<br \/>\n&#8211; Even in offering an Auto Mode now on the 580EX II, Canon fudged it by not having the Auto mode immediately accessible.
