{"id":1482,"date":"2009-08-27T21:48:01","date_gmt":"2009-08-28T01:48:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.planetneil.com\/tangents\/?p=1482"},"modified":"2018-01-03T19:02:34","modified_gmt":"2018-01-03T23:02:34","slug":"when-your-flash-fails-to-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/when-your-flash-fails-to-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"when your flash fails to fire .."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/digital-imaging\/Erin-1851-900.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/digital-imaging\/Erin-1851.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">[ click on the image to see a larger version ]<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What do you do with an image that is under-exposed but there is a certain moment that you love?<\/p>\n<p>Well, perhaps you get lucky that when you convert it to B&amp;W and crank up the exposure and embrace the noise \/ digital grain &#8230; and all this adds\u00a0to the\u00a0mood and in this case even poignancy of the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the original unedited image of the bride dancing with her dad &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/digital-imaging\/Erin-1851-unedited.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was shooting a little too fast for my flash to keep up, and got the occasional under-exposed frame when the flash didn&#8217;t fire.\u00a0 As I often do, I try to keep the ambient light 2 stops or so under, and then use TTL \u00a0flash to bring up the exposure on my subject.<\/p>\n<p>Even though\u00a0I did get lucky here, I did help it in my favor by how I position myself in relation to my subject and the background.\u00a0 I do try to\u00a0place myself so that I can use some background light to give a sense of place, and help giving the image depth as well.\u00a0 Doing so helped here in creating a lighter background when I pulled up the exposure by 2 stops to give &#8220;correct exposure&#8221; on the image.\u00a0 With the background now blowing out, it gives an ethereal look to the image, which for me, enhances it.<\/p>\n<p>For us gear-heads:<br \/>\nNikon D3;\u00a0\u00a0 70-200mm f2.8 AF-S<br \/>\n1\/60th @ f2.8 @ 2500 ISO<\/p>\n<p>At such a high ISO, under-exposed by two stops .. the digital grain \/ noise will be there.\u00a0 But really, the\u00a0noise?\u00a0 Does anyone even notice the noise here?\u00a0 Look at the photograph again &#8230; and feel it instead. The mood and the moment.
