{"id":15884,"date":"2013-07-23T01:44:46","date_gmt":"2013-07-23T05:44:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/?p=15884"},"modified":"2017-08-25T21:48:17","modified_gmt":"2017-08-26T01:48:17","slug":"photographing-couples-posing-and-composition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/photographing-couples-posing-and-composition\/","title":{"rendered":"Photographing couples &#8211; Posing and composition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/weddings\/aruba\/Desha-Kyle-5241.jpg\" alt=\"destination wedding photographer Aruba\" width=\"900\" height=\"601\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>Photographing couples &#8211; Posing and composition<\/h1>\n<p>Re-editing and re-vamping photographs for my blog post of a <a href=\"http:\/\/oneperfectmoment.com\/aruba-destination-wedding-photographer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">destination wedding in Aruba<\/a>, I found it enlightening to realize how much my style has progressed over years in post-processing too.<\/p>\n<p>As part of <a href=\"http:\/\/oneperfectmoment.com\/category\/photography\/wedding-photographer\/style\/destination-wedding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">destination wedding photography<\/a> coverage, I offer extended photo sessions around the exotic locale after (or before) the wedding date. While we&#8217;re there, we may as well use the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph at the top was taken on the day after the wedding when we took a rented car and drove around the arid areas of the island &#8211; away from the touristy parts. There was a short rainstorm while we were driving, and the landscape looked really crisp. Offsetting the couple against this landscape just seemed like a great idea. I posed them into the light. I had various compositions of this, but liked the off-center image the most.<\/p>\n<p>In this way, for any single setup, I always shoot wide &amp; tight; vertical &amp; horizontal; high &amp; low viewpoints. This way I get a variety of images, and in the culling process later on, I can pick the few that work, or give me the most variety.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s usually more than just one photograph &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/weddings\/aruba\/Aruba-destination-wedding-photography-5259.jpg\" alt=\"aruba destination wedding photography\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For the image at the top, I was standing in the road. Looking to my left, I saw the road surface glistening with the rain that had fallen. I then asked the bride and groom, Desha and Kyle, to slowly meander down the road. Perfect. I instantly liked what I saw in my viewfinder. A vertical composition like this just made the most sense.<\/p>\n<p>Just a minute and a half had passed between these two images, and the clouds came over, softening the light a bit. Not that that mattered really &#8211; this image would&#8217;ve worked with sunlight as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\namzn_assoc_placement = \"adunit0\";\namzn_assoc_search_bar = \"false\";\namzn_assoc_tracking_id = \"tangents-books-20\";\namzn_assoc_ad_mode = \"manual\";\namzn_assoc_ad_type = \"smart\";\namzn_assoc_marketplace = \"amazon\";\namzn_assoc_region = \"US\";\namzn_assoc_title = \"Books on Posing\";\namzn_assoc_linkid = \"2e3de82d80b43ca97d3e6dda3f6b1482\";\namzn_assoc_asins = \"1681981947,0321966465,B01K0UAWQG,1118290518\";\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script src=\"\/\/z-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/onejs?MarketPlace=US\"><\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Change your position relative\u00a0to your subject<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The key idea here<\/strong> is that if you change your position and move around, you can often get images that look hugely different, because &#8230;<br \/>\n1. you&#8217;re changing your background, and<br \/>\n2. you&#8217;re changing your position in relation to the light.<\/p>\n<p>For me,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/effective-on-location-portraits\/\">finding an interesting background<\/a>, is nearly\u00a0as important as having great light. Now, with\u00a0off-camera flash, you can concentrate on the background since you can add awesome light anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Changing your position in relation to your subject and the light &#8211; that triangle &#8211; changes the way the direction of the light.
