{"id":4116,"date":"2010-07-16T22:44:45","date_gmt":"2010-07-17T02:44:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/?p=4116"},"modified":"2017-08-23T00:01:50","modified_gmt":"2017-08-23T04:01:50","slug":"using-a-neutral-density-nd-filter-with-flash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/using-a-neutral-density-nd-filter-with-flash\/","title":{"rendered":"using a neutral density (ND) filter with flash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/flash\/ND\/NV2_5070-900.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>using neutral density (ND) filters with flash to control depth of field<\/h1>\n<p>Working in bright light, the limitation of having a <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/maximum-flash-sync-speed\/\">maximum flash sync speed<\/a> forces a small aperture on us. \u00a0That small aperture means more depth of field than we might like.<\/p>\n<p>There are two ways to force a high shutter speed \/ wide aperture combination:<br \/>\n&#8211; go to high speed sync (HSS) mode.<br \/>\n&#8211; use a neutral density (ND) filter.<\/p>\n<p>Using HSS dramatically cuts down our power of our flash, so if we&#8217;re working in very bright light, we might be past the edge of what our flash is capable of. Then we need to bring it back to maximum flash sync speed, but force the wider aperture with a neutral density filter instead.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/flash\/ND\/NV2_5072-900.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"601\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The photo at the top of this article was taken at \u00a01\/250 @ f4 @ 200 ISO; which is 3 stops below the actual exposure of this image here.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of 1\/250 @ f11 @ 200 ISO, I was able to go to a much wider aperture (3 stops) by adding an 8x Neutral Density filter:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00485ZJB8\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00485ZJB8&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=tangents-85mm-20&amp;linkId=2HFGQXISO6TCGCBN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">B+W 0.9 (3 stop) ND Neutral Density\u00a077mm\u00a0MRC 110M Filter<\/a>\u00a0(Amazon) \u00a0The 8x means a 3 stop reduction in light. \u00a0You can see the difference in depth of field, even on this 600px wide image. \u00a0(Click on the photos for larger images.)<\/p>\n<p>Just to explain how the numerical value of 8x relates to 3 stops of light. One full &#8216;stop&#8217; in shutter speed or aperture or ISO value means a doubling or halving of the amount of light.
