{"id":4510,"date":"2010-08-21T23:23:08","date_gmt":"2010-08-22T03:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/?p=4510"},"modified":"2019-10-07T23:15:19","modified_gmt":"2019-10-08T03:15:19","slug":"photography-direction-light-change-background","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/photography-direction-light-change-background\/","title":{"rendered":"photography: direction of light &#038; change in background"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/models\/catherine\/NV2_3768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"901\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>Positioning your subject &#8211; direction of light &amp; choice of background<\/h1>\n<p>Taking cover from the rain under an\u00a0awning during a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/photography-workshops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">photography workshop in New York<\/a>, we ended up in this\u00a0spot against a wall that was painted black. \u00a0However, looking along the wall at an\u00a0angle, the black paint of the wall reflected the light from behind. This completely changed the character of the background. \u00a0Since the available light was low level, and not flattering, we added some light from an off-camera flash in a softbox.<\/p>\n<p>Shooting nearly completely in line with the flash, the light on Catherine was very even. \u00a0Or flat. (Depends on how you want to think about it.) As you can see here, shooting more straight-on to the wall, it does indeed look black.<\/p>\n<p>But moving positioning the light, and myself and the model at angles to each other &#8230; I was able to get the light from the background, and more dramatic light on Catherine &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/models\/catherine\/NV2_3764.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"901\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see in the pull-back shot below, there is a huge amount of random clutter outside the frame. \u00a0Zooming to 165mm and moving closer to Catherine, and shooting along the wall &#8230; isolated her against the out-of-focus colors in the background.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/models\/catherine\/NV1_7118-900.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"599\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even though off-camera light was used here, the approach is very much in line as described in the previous post where we just\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/photography-direction-of-light-choice-of-background\/\">used available ligh<\/a>t to photograph Catherine. \u00a0But once again it was a combination of how I, as the photographer, position myself and the model and the background in relation to the light and the background.
