I forever seem to hover between sensible purchases that are necessary to advance &#8230; and just sheer indulgence. Here are some of what I think were my wisest investments &#8230; all the way down to some dubious side-tracked choices.<\/p>\n<p>Notably about the gear I purchased, 2018 was the year where I &#8220;retooled&#8221; somewhat to be able to shoot more video, and also shoot more commercial timelapse videos. Of course I am a little biased when it comes to this book &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/category\/models\/anelisa-durham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anelisa<\/a> is on the cover.<\/p>\n<p>While Jennifer covers lighting, wardrobe, and\u00a0other aspects of boudoir photography, the core of those book focuses on posing. This made it seem like Canon and Nikon were left scrabbling to release mirrorless cameras well.<\/p>\n<p>When you compare the Canon R and Nikon Z6 and Sony A7 iii to one other, the Sony still comes ahead in features. The lens that I permanently keep attached to the Sony Ay iii, is the <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/sony-fe-16-35mm-f28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sony FE 16-35mm f\/2.8<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/sony-fe-16-35mm-f28-bh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>B&amp;H<\/em><\/a> \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/sony-fe-16-35mm-f28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Amazon<\/em><\/a>). Corporate events where there is someone speaking. Or the church ceremony. All too often I found myself cringing at the loud shutter of the Nikon D5 (which I love dearly still). I wanted, no needed a camera with a silent shutter.<\/p>\n<p>I first went for the Fuji X-H1 which was a very likable camera, but I found the Fuji f\/2.8 zooms weren&#8217;t as sharp overall as I needed my lenses to be. And yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/review-sony-fe-24-105mm-f4-g-oss-lens\/#comment-2201163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I prefer my professional lenses to be sharp<\/a>. Nikon was too late with the announcement of their Z6 \/ Z7 mirrorless cameras, so I went with the <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/sony-a9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sony A9<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/sony-a9-bh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">B&amp;H<\/a> \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/sony-a9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon<\/a>). It is just what I needed.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from a few quirks, the Sony A9 is a phenomenal camera, and it quickly became the camera that I use in available light settings. For anything involving flash, I still prefer the Nikon D5. But the Sony A9 quickly proved to be very useful for my work where I need exactly this kind of camera.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><div class='one_third last'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/sony-a9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/sony\/A9\/Sony-A9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><div class='clear'><\/div><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/sony-fe-24-105mm-f4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Sony FE 24-105mm f\/4 G<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><div class='two_third'>\n\t\t\t\t\tDipping my toes into a Sony system, I didn&#8217;t quite want to acquire an arsenal of lenses yet &#8212; I&#8217;m well stocked up with Nikon optics already &#8212; but I still needed one excellent general purpose lens to use on the Sony A9.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately the <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/sony-fe-24-105mm-f4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sony 24-105mm f\/4 G lens<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/sony-fe-24-105mm-f4-bh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>B&amp;H<\/em><\/a> \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/sony-fe-24-105mm-f4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Amazon<\/em><\/a>)\u00a0turned out to be both versatile and optically really really good. Here is my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/review-sony-fe-24-105mm-f4-g-oss-lens\/\">review of the Sony FE 24-105mm f\/4 G OSS Lens<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><div class='one_third last'>\n\t\t\t\t\t\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/sony-a9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/sony\/24-105mm\/Sony_24-105mm-f4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><div class='clear'><\/div><\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\" \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/dji-gimbal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">DJI Ronin-S gimbal<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><div class='two_third'>\n\t\t\t\t\tMy third foray into gimbals is the <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/dji-gimbal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DJI Ronin-S<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/dji-gimbal-bh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>B&amp;H<\/em><\/a> \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/recommends\/dji-gimbal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Amazon<\/em><\/a>), and I finally have a powerful gimbal that I can use with a zoom lens on the camera.<\/p>\n<p>I needed a gimbal that is relatively compact, ie, a gimbal that can be used with one hand, and that is strong enough to not start shaking when you zoom the lens out. The smaller gimbals struggle with the redistribution of weight as the lens expands. The Ronin-S handles this really well.<\/p>\n<p>The Ronin-S is also easy to set up, and has an app for your phone to help with calibration. The slanted design of the rear arm helps in letting you see the camera&#8217;s screen. This lens resolution test chart was also helpful in figuring out that the f\/2.8 Fuji zooms I was using wasn&#8217;t as sharp as the Nikon or Sony equivalents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The Nikon D850 that I briefly had (for a week), convinced me that I needed a second Nikon D5 &#8230; and I was able to pick up an excellent condition used copy for only $3,500<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Embarrassingly enough, I badly damaged my Tamrac roller case that I kept my cameras in, when I backed my car over it in the driveway. No damage at all to my gear, but the bag was a mess. It was more than 12 years old, and was starting to look haggard anyway. Time for an update. I had real trouble collapsing it again, and it would take me an embarrassingly long time in front of my clients to fold it &#8230; until, with the help of some of my friends on FB, I get this helpful tip &#8211; fold it like a taco! I had no trouble collapsing smaller reflectors, but this thing had to fold in a triple kinda way, and there&#8217;s a knack to it.<\/p>\n<p>So I would highly recommend this collapsible background, but there&#8217;s a bit of a learning curve with it. This video below was shot after I got it right in one go, and had my friend record me doing it &#8230; but then it took me three ties.
