(model &#8211; Priscilla)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/models\/priscilla\/NV1_9730-900.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/models\/priscilla\/NV1_9730.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">[ Nikon D3;\u00a0 Nikon 200mm f2 AF-S VR .. 1\/100th @ f2 @ 1250 ISO ]<br \/>\nclick on the image to see a larger version<\/span><\/p>\n<p>My friend Steve Z from Colorado\u00a0was around for a few days, visiting friends and family here in NJ.\u00a0 So we got together to do a photo shoot, and I arranged to meet up with Priscilla, a model with whom I&#8217;ve worked before.\u00a0\u00a0 I also was fortunate in getting permission to photograph inside the Paterson museum &#8211;\u00a0an interesting historic building.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Z\u00a0is also into photographic lighting, so we\u00a0packed up a\u00a0bunch of gear \u00a0&#8211; a beauty dish, softboxes, speedlights and video lights.\u00a0 We were ready for a <strong>lot<\/strong> of playing around with lighting.<\/p>\n<p>When we arrived at\u00a0the museum, my heart sank when I saw the place was flooded with fluorescent light.\u00a0 In my experience thus far, fluorescent lights = ugly light.\u00a0\u00a0 I decided that perhaps this was an opportunity then to get some material for a tutorial page on how to use flash with fluorescent lighting.\u00a0\u00a0 When I&#8217;ve dealt with the ugly green look of fluorescent lighting before, I always over-rode it with flash.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Fluorescent lighting often has a green color cast, and the discontinuous spectrum makes it difficult at times to get great skin tones.\u00a0 Also\u00a0the lights flicker and the\u00a0White Balance can even vary as you\u00a0hit different parts of the cycle. \u00a0So I thought this might just be\u00a0material for\u00a0a tutorial here &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nIn order\u00a0to show that fluorescent lighting can cause that kind of change in WB for a sequence of images, I set an approximate WB via the Kelvin setting on my camera.\u00a0 With the Nikon\u00a0D3 set to continuous drive, I fired off 3 bursts of about 8 frames each .. my shutter speed at 1\/100th for the one burst, and 1\/60th for the other two.<\/p>\n<p>And to my surprise, the lighting looked awesome!\u00a0 Even light, image after image.<br \/>\nNot even a hint of green. It was warmer than daylight, but looked great.<\/p>\n<p>So for much the entire 2+ hour photo session\u00a0there, we shot with the available light .. fluorescent lighting!\u00a0 Knock me over with a feather.<\/p>\n<p>That photo above there is <strong>all<\/strong> available light!<br \/>\nIn post-processing the RAW file, I reduced some of the yellow in the WB as I recorded it, and also added a touch more magenta to give me a skin tone I liked.\u00a0 And with the local corrections in ACR \/ Bridge, I reduced two hot spots, and brightened up her eye a little bit.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0am still\u00a0surprised that the lighting was so good and so even, especially from fluorescent lighting.\u00a0 So much for my preconceived idea that fluorescent lighting <strong>has<\/strong> to be bad.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously this will depend on the specific fluorescent lights that are used, as well as other influences, such as the age of the bulbs.\u00a0 But whatever fluorescent tubes they used in the museum, must have had some magic done to it, for the light look surprisingly good.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<br \/>\n<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 1px;\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/icons\/divider.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"1\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now you may well ask what\u00a0<strong>is<\/strong> that color and shading\u00a0there in the background.<br \/>\nAnd then I will have to explain to you that it is actually the USS Holland &#8211;
