{"id":930,"date":"2009-04-30T19:11:44","date_gmt":"2009-04-30T23:11:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.planetneil.com\/tangents\/?p=930"},"modified":"2021-05-18T03:00:19","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T07:00:19","slug":"destination-wedding-photography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/destination-wedding-photography\/","title":{"rendered":"destination wedding photography .."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/destinations\/Lisa-Shaun-2120-edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>destination wedding photography<\/h1>\n<p>A few times a year I&#8217;m fortunate enough to <a href=\"http:\/\/oneperfectmoment.com\/category\/photography\/wedding-photographer\/style\/destination-wedding\/\">photograph a destination wedding<\/a>, where I fly out to a more glamorous location than New Jersey.\u00a0 The Bahamas, Aruba, Jamaica, and even locations within the USA are choice destinations for couples who are looking to have their weddings in an exotic locale.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>choice<\/strong> of equipment to fly out to photograph a destination wedding, as well as the way to transport them becomes a\u00a0real concern.\u00a0 You have to have a flexible selection of gear with you, with a certain amount of redundancy in case something goes wrong with a piece of equipment.\u00a0 Yet it all has to fit into a portable camera bag or case &#8211; and one that can be taken on board a plane as a\u00a0carry-on bag.\u00a0 This really is of great importance, since if you read some news reports it would even appear as if thievery from luggage at airports are rampant.<\/p>\n<p>So there is the delicate balance &#8211; a sensible choice of equipment that has to fit into a bag that is the right size for international carry-on luggage &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For <strong>that<\/strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinktankphoto.com\/pages\/affiliates\/?rfsn=139854.357746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Think Tank<\/strong> range of rollers<\/a> are perfect.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinktankphoto.com\/pages\/affiliates\/?rfsn=139854.357746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Think Tank Airport Security<\/strong><\/a> roller cases come in two distinct sizes ..\u00a0one specifically\u00a0designed for USA Domestic air travel size; and the other for the international standard for carry-on luggage.\u00a0\u00a0 (They also\u00a0have a wide range of bags, speed-belts\u00a0and harness systems.)<\/p>\n<p>Last year I posted about <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/and-far-away\/\">my choice of equipment that I take with me on destination weddings<\/a>, based around the Canon system.\u00a0 I fit a surprisingly large amount of equipment in the Think Tank Airport Security (version 1), roller that I have.\u00a0 It was also the roller case that I used when I traveled within the USA to present the <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/photography-workshops\/\">workshops on flash photography<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, I&#8217;ve changed to the Nikon system, and with me traveling more on international flights, (including the upcoming workshops in the UK and Ireland), I decided to update my camera bag to the slightly smaller sized bag, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinktankphoto.com\/pages\/affiliates\/?rfsn=139854.357746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Think Tank Airport International<\/strong><\/a>. My new bag arrived yesterday, and I was curious to see if I could fit in a solid selection of equipment into the smaller bag.\u00a0 (This post will then also double-up as a review of the Think Tank Airport International (v2)<\/p>\n<p>The newer case (Airport International) is 3&#8243; shorter than the older (Airport Security) roller case:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/destinations\/IMG_8120-900.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/destinations\/IMG_8120.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">[ on the left is the Airport Security (version 1); on the right, the Airport Security (version 2) ]<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So I was curious to see how I would have to re-arrange and re-think a new selection of equipment to take with me on destination weddings, and any other kind of travel overseas with camera equipment.\u00a0 With some shuffling and re-shuffling of equipment, I was surprised to see everything I managed to fit into the bag.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/destinations\/IMG_8124-900.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/destinations\/IMG_8124.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jam-packed!<\/p>\n<p>In this next image, I moved some of the layers out of the bag, otherwise I don&#8217;t think anyone will believe me that I fit everything that I did, into the bag.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/destinations\/IMG_8126-900.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/destinations\/IMG_8126.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/icons\/divider-51.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking at the smaller items first:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/destinations\/IMG_8130-900.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/destinations\/IMG_8130.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The rows from left to right, (top to bottom):<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 <strong>Visible Dust &#8211; Arctic Butterfly<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0I just can&#8217;t risk being powerless to remove a\u00a0persistent dust bunny on my camera&#8217;s sensor<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 <strong>two Nikon SD-9 battery packs<\/strong>, which I keep loaded with rechargeable batteries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Nikon SU-800 wireless TTL transmitter<\/strong>, in case I need to control a speedlight off-camera.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 two <strong>Tamrac memory card wallets<\/strong>.<br \/>\nEach wallet now contains eight <strong>8Gb SanDisk CF cards.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Each\u00a0camera also has two 8Gb cards.\u00a0 I\u00a0rely on the Nikon D3 offering a back-up card slot, giving me peace of mind against the possibility of\u00a0 any of the CF cards failing.\u00a0\u00a0As an aside, I only shoot in RAW.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0<strong>a polarizer filter<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 I don&#8217;t often use it, but like having it handy in case I want to super-saturate skies.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 a business card holder.\u00a0 (It is the aluminum case with the red ends.)<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 black hair bands.\u00a0 (I use this to keep\u00a0items in place such as the Black Foamie Things.)<br \/>\n&#8211; \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/my-choice-of-flash-modifiers\/\">two pieces of black foam which I use as my light modifiers<\/a>,<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 on top of this I have displayed the cord and plug to recharge my iPhone and my iPod.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0<strong>NiMH battery charger<\/strong> for AA size batteries.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 a spare battery for the Nikon D3.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 my iPod, an essential item for traveling.<br \/>\n(I actually keep this in the carry-case for my noise-canceling headphones.)<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 <strong>iPhone<\/strong> &#8211; indispensable.<br \/>\nI have everything on hand with the iPhone &#8211;\u00a0my Calendar and Contacts.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 the <strong>Mophie Juice Pack<\/strong>, to give my iPhone longer battery life.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in any of these items, check out these pages listing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/photo-gear\/\"><strong>all my photo gear<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0&#8211; \u00a0all which link to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bhpho.to\/3yhq3Ig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">B&amp;H\u2019s website <\/a>where these items can be purchased.\u00a0 There is also an Amazon link at the end.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s already a fair amount of stuff, but I can squeeze those items into the corners and crevices.\u00a0 The real bulk of the equipment are the following items:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/destinations\/IMG_8133-900.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/images\/destinations\/IMG_8133.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Firstly, the two cameras are both <strong>Nikon D3<\/strong> bodies.\u00a0 They are currently my camera of choice, and nearly the Best Camera in the World, (but not quite.) \u00a0 Another good choice would be the Nikon D700, which when used without the grip, is lighter than the D3, and would save some weight and bulk.<\/p>\n<p>The two flashguns in the front are <strong>Nikon SB-900 Speedlites<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The lenses are,\u00a0 in the back row, from left to right:<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0Nikon 16mm f2.8 fish-eye<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0Nikon 50mm f1.4G AF-S<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 AF-S (it&#8217;s a big lens, but I just\u00a0don&#8217;t want to leave it behind.)<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 AF-S<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR AF-S<\/p>\n<p>To not have this post be Nikon-centric, please check out the previous posting on <a href=\"https:\/\/neilvn.com\/tangents\/and-far-away\/\"><strong>my selection of Canon gear<\/strong><\/a> that I used to travel with.\u00a0 As before, it is interesting also to see what can be left behind and not hamper you on an important photo shoot where you aren&#8217;t close to your home-base or any kind of back-up<\/p>\n<p>I hope this post, and the previous post will give some insight in the selection of equipment.\u00a0 You have to be self-sufficient when you travel for a photo shoot such as this.\u00a0 And paramount is that you travel as light as possible, without compromising quality and flexibility of equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, I am surprised at the amount of equipment that I was able to fit into this camera case.\u00a0 The bonus of course is that this bag is designed to fit the requirements for carry-on luggage for international air travel.\u00a0 On top of that, the Airport International bag (and Airport Security) come with a series of locks and cables, to help you secure your bag.<\/p>\n<p>And again &#8211;
