Greetings Neil!
I like what you have done here. A lot of work! I picked up your book on using the speedlite and can relate to the approach. I appreciate the starting point suggestions.
I picked up a camera to photograph my work( check out website)as opposed to having a pro shoot it for me. It turns out I enjoy this quite a bit.
Would you have a quick suggestion for a book that can explain why digital cameras use iso and not some -digital only- scale of reference???
Am not afraid of reading some math but prefer a book that can present things in a practical manner.
Best!
Karl
Karl, I guess there’s no other reason for why digital cameras use ISO as a measure of sensitivity, other than THAT is how it has been done for decades. A change now simply wouldn’t take.
It’s for the same reason we still have 24 hrs and 60 mins and 60 seconds .. instead of a metric clock. It’s just how it has been done all this time.
Besides, understanding how ISO is numbered, shouldn’t hold you back. Photographers through all this time have been creating astonishing images, despite this handicap. ; )
Hi Neil,
could it be that you recently updated/changed your flash photograpy section? I’ve been looking for some articles here several times now but I can’t seem to find them anymore. I remember that one of them included a (wedding?) couple that sat against a rather dark, patterned wall. There was also a shot of the room/ceiling where you demonstrated that the walls weren’t even white or nearby but instead they were also dark (and patterned) but the bounce flash technique still worked. Do you remember?
I have the feeling that the very best articles have gone missing and the order of the flash photography section is somewhat different then a few weeks ago! Or did I just look in the wrong section somehow?
I’d be glad if you could tell me if something has changed!
Best wishes,
Kai
Oh, and Happy Anniversary! You’ve really accumulated a whole lot of useful and straightforward information here!!
I always hate, when I pose a question somehwere and then find the answer by myself some minutes later: it was your article on flash and ambient light. Did anything change about that flash photography section though?
I did clean up the Flash Photography pages a month ago – I added more photos, and removed some of the older photos. I streamlined the text, and added more text to about half the pages. All in an effort to improve the series of articles.
The article (which you subsequently found), is the one on Flash + Ambient Light. I didn’t move it, so your bookmark should still have worked. What I did change, was the lead-in photograph and text which I added to the original piece.
So the intent is always to make the text flow better, and to improve clarity. With the specific page you mentioned then, I added more material. It would make no sense for me to remove the “very best articles” … but thank you for the compliment.
Ahh, alright. I was afraid my memory was going haywire! It’s good to know that the articles and thus the information are still there! They are very useful, I’ve recommended them to people rather often lately, when they had issues with flash photography.
Thank you for your answer and all the best in the next 10 years (and thereafter)!
