video: Stingray City, Grand Cayman

January 21, 2017 Neil vN 1 Comment

Stingray City, Grand Cayman

We took one of the organized trips out to the sandbar in Grand Cayman, where large groups of stingrays converge at what is known as Stingray City. Walking on the sandbar, you are surrounded by stingrays. (They come for the bits of squid that the tour groups bring.)  I’ve been told this should be on everyone’s bucket list, and I agree.  It was an incredible experience for me since I’ve had a deep lifelong fascination for nature and animals. This is how I got into photography in the first place as a youngster – wanting to record the wild birds that I saw.

I compiled a short video clip of the stingrays we saw today at Stingray City, Grand Cayman. The video was shot on a GoPro Hero4 (affiliate), which I held underwater on a stick. I just aimed it at the stingrays, with no viewing screen on the GoPro. They were so tame and inquisitive, that it was relatively easy to have them in the frame as they swam by.

I tried as best as I could to not let the swell of the waves push me around too much, so that I could get relatively steady video. I also didn’t want to step on one of these beasts! Oh, I had a stingray bite my middle finger by accident … it sucked two digits of my finger into its mouth before letting go. No damage. It was quite gentle as it was looking for food. Surreal.

The video was compiled in iMovie on the laptop that I brought with me on this vacation.

Here is the view from the boat:
