Low light focusing

I'd aprishiate some advice about this metter. I own D4s and sb900. Recently I wanted to do some backlit wedding photo outside in the dark. But somehow my focus did not find a subject. It was dark, true... but...doesn't cameras have some AF assist focus or something to use in such conditions?

How do you manage those backlit shots that are made in very low light? I almost failed to do the shot, after my camera kept searching for focus and not find it. :-/

Thanks for advice.
