photo critique request

thank you Neil for all the education in your books, Craftsy videos, and Tangents blog. i have learned so much from you. i had the opportunity to shoot a wedding recently and was able to use some of that education. i still have a long way to go. it is one thing to read it, even understand it, and another thing to use that knowledge in a timely way like at a wedding under time pressure. it was so great to be able to use some of that education on Shari and Tags special day.

i used bounce flash with a spinlight 360 for the interior shots. in reviewing my photos afterwards i realized i should not have used the high fstop and i could have used less DOF and consequently lower ISO. i had been using the high fstop for the macro ring shots just before. the outside shots during the wedding i used a little fill flash a couple of stops under the ambient exposure. it rained most of the day until just before the wedding. then just started lightly raining at the end of the ceremony so we had to shoot the family pictures in a less desirable location.

thanks again.

  • Hey, GP - was this your first wedding? Whether is was or was not, you should have no complaints judging by what you've posted.

  • i have shot a couple others as a second shooter. i can't post any of those photos. i was the main photographer a couple years ago at my daughters very small wedding. only 8 family members. that really sparked my interest in learning more and i discovered Neil. that was with a Canon Rebel T1i and 18-55 kit lens.

i volunteer for Angel City Derby Girls. it has been a great learning thing for me. i can set up my lights around the track. it is a lot faster action than a wedding and no pressure as i am just a volunteer.

The bride's portraits look good. Nice lighting!
You nailed the ring shot as well.

    Now, the kiss shot.
It is what you were presented with. That's how it was. I would include it with the rest of the photos that I give to my client ... however, I wouldn't show that photo on my blog, or for critique.

Because you were limited with your angle and composition because of the scenario you were presented with, the photograph itself is limited. So it doesn't show your talents at their best.

So I can't critique it. But as I said, I wouldn't show it on my blog or FB.
