compression and bit size

I shot a wedding with 2 Nikon D750's a couple weeks ago and while shooting the processional the buffer ran out of space to the point I could not release the shutter and the processor was painfully slow to catch up. I looked around online and didn't see anyone else raise this issue. I changed the compression to non-lossless 12bit and that improved the buffer from 13 to 19 available actuations, but I'm naive as to what effect that will have to image quality. I've been using Sandisk 32g 80mb/sec memory cards, which I have a bunch of because I've haven't  had this issue before. I'm wondering what other people use for the compression/bit size setting and if investing in faster cards will have a significant impact on the issue.
