Using the Canon EOS 6D in movie mode
To test the Canon EOS 6D camera (B&H / Amazon), and the Canon 24-70mm f4.0L IS lens (affiliate), I met up with Anastasia Z in New York. She had such presence and confidence, that while shooting stills of her earlier in the day, I had an idea of a video sequence we could do. And with that, here is an overview of how well the Canon 6D fares as a video camera. So when the light levels starting falling this afternoon, we went to Times Square, which is always insanely lit up by the numerous billboards. An ever-changing Read more inside...Bokeh comparison: Sony RX1 vs Nikon 35mmm f/1.4G
Bokeh comparison: Sony RX1 vs Nikon 35mmm f/1.4G
Sony has been on fire recently with their new camera releases. The Sony RX100 is arguably the best point&shoot on the market right now. The full-frame Sony A99 DSLR has been getting great reports ... and then there is the new Sony RX1 (B&H / Amazon) - full-frame goodness in a compact camera with a fixed 35mm f/2 lens. And just in anyone has missed the crucial news - Sony cameras use Zeiss lenses. The word "legendary" is usually automatically associated with the word Zeiss. A quick summary of what makes the Sony Read more inside...review: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II
review: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II
It was with great excitement that I received a review copy of the new Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II (B&H / Amazon) lens. There were several reasons that this highly-anticipated lens interested me. My experience with Canon gear has been ... let's just say it's been an uneven experience at times. There are specifically two lenses that got my ire - the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 II and the (original) Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 The older Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 has a bit of a reputation. While some people love it, others hate it for being an inconsistent lens. Read more inside...photography: how good do your lenses need to be?

Olena, who I photographed during a recent personal photography workshop in New York. camera settings: 1/320 @ f/3.5 @ 800 ISO (available light) I was trying out the new Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 VC (B&H) for the images I shot during this workshop. (It comes in a Canon version too.) It appears to be a fantastic lens. Build quality is good. The feel of it is good. The zoom ring has a nice throw. And it features stabilization! Nice touch. However, shooting other images at wide open aperture, I wasn't sure I was happy Read more inside...First impressions: Nikon D800
First impressions of the Nikon D800
I've been using the Nikon D4 for a while now, and love it. For me, the Nikon D4 offers more than enough resolution for wedding photography. Of course, wedding photography is a niche. There are other genres and types of photography where large files are a benefit. Landscape photographers and commercial photographers have a need for large digital files for maximum detail. And with that Nikon must have seen a gap, and made the surprising jump from the 12 megapixel D700, to the incredibly high (for now at least) 36 megapixels of the Nikon Read more inside...review: Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8G lens
review: Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8G lens
At the same time that I photographed Anelisa for the review of the Nikon 28mm f/1.8 AF-S lens, I had the brand-new Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8G lens (B&H / Amazon) on my other camera body. For every place that I photographed Anelisa with the 28mm f/1.8 lens, I also shot similar images with the 85mm f/1.8 lens. In a way, these two lenses complement each other, if you like working with a dual prime lens setup. A nice wide-angle view with the one lens, while the 85mm is a sweet portrait lens. Wanting to show off the shallow depth-of-field, I Read more inside...review: Nikon AF-S 28mm f/1.8G lens
review: Nikon AF-S 28mm f/1.8G lens
To test out the Nikon AF-S 28mm f/1.8G (B&H / Amazon), I met up with Anelisa in Brooklyn to try my hand at some environmental portraiture. With such a wide field-of-view, you inevitably have to include the background. I wanted to show the effect of the shallow depth-of-field of this lens, so I shot at f/1.8 or f/2.0 throughout. When you use a fast (i.e., wide aperture) wide-angle lens, and have sufficient distance between your subject and the background, that shallow depth of field can be used to great effect. It can be tricky Read more inside...video clip: using the Canon 600EX-RT Speedlites on a photo shoot
BTS video: using the Canon 600EX-RT Speedlites
In my review of the Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT, I raved about the ease of use of the new speedlite by Canon that has built-in radio transmitters. The same with my subsequent review Canon ST-E3-RT Transmitter. This system is going to have huge impact! The behind-the-scenes video clip as I set every thing up, is of the photo session with Molly K where I used Canon 600EX-RT Speedlite (B&H / Amazon), and the Canon ST-E3 Speedlite Transmitter (B&H / Amazon), during an actual shoot. You can actually hear the Read more inside...review: Canon ST-E3-RT Transmitter and Canon 600EX-RT Speedlite
review: Canon ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter and Canon 600EX-RT
In my review of the Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT, I've already raved about the ease of use of the new speedlite - thanks to a menu system that you can follow without having to decipher it via a manual), but mostly because of the built-in radio control of the flash. This elevates the Canon 600EX-RT to a new level. As mentioned in my review, I really think this flashgun will change things in the photo industry. It's huge. The main advantages of the Canon ST-E3 Speedlite Transmitter (B&H / Amazon), is that you Read more inside...- « Previous Page
