Photography scam / how photographers are scammed
The over-payment scam is such a pervasive scam, that you might think everyone has heard about it, and is immune to it. Yet, I often enough see this come up as a question in a Facebook group – where a photographer is unsure if an enquiry is a scam. Most often they are. This is how these advance-fee scams work, and how photographers are scammed:
The scammer will overpay you, and you have to pay the difference to another vendor, whether the florist or model, or whatever. There is no florist / model / whatever – the other vendor is in fact the scammer. The money you pay to the other vendor will be lost, because the money the scammer sent to you will be through a fraudulent credit card. The money paid to you will be reversed from your account in a few days, and you will be out of pocket. Let me restate that for emphasis: You will be out of pocket. There is no other vendor. It is just you and the scammer.
I know it might sound attractive – someone wanting to give you a lot of money, and is even a little insistent on it. Just know it is a scam.
Here is a recent email exchange, and as you read along, you will see the progression until the scammer reveal themselves:
The email I received from “Cheryl Brown” at: [email protected]
Note the .org domain for “allrecipes”. Not .com but .org — that already is suspicious. Never mind the incorrect spelling of “recipes”.
I came across your website online while searching for a fashion photographer, your work seems impressive..i’m looking for an experienced Photographer to work with me on an ongoing fashion articles for family circle/allrecipe magazine..Get back to me if interested .
regards
Cheryl Brown
I replied, asking where “Cheryl” is located because scammers are always (initially) vague about the location. Remember, it is a copy & paste email they send out.
Hi there Cheryl,
What projects did you have in mind?
And where are you located?
Cheryl replied. Note that she didn’t answer my question. There is also now the authoritative touch of the privacy note, as many companies have in the footer of their emails. (For brevity, I deleted it from “her” other emails that I post further on.)

The brief is still too vague, so I prod for more details:
Studio work, or out on location?
Do you have examples of the kind of style you are going for?
Along with these details, “Cheryl” also sent a number of Fashion images, shot on location. I am not posting them here, since they are most certainly just stolen off the internet. Remember, there is no client. It is just the scammer. Nothing is real.
Hi,
Thanks for the quick response and the interest to work with us on this project. Your works are really impressive and aesthetic; I would like to work with you on this gig. There are few details you need to know:
Wardrobe will be picked by our stylist based on urban trends for the winter season. The stylist will also be available on the shooting date. We expect you to shoot in an urban gritty or/and natural outdoor look with clean product focused images; I’m attaching some pictures as samples.
You will have to do little retouching if pictures can be taken with natural lighting. Final images will be 300dpi or larger, mix of rectangular and verticals, to be delivered via google drive or onedrive. Images will on be used as an editorial content on familycirlce.com for 12 months.
Could you confirm that you will be able to deliver this quality on or before the delivery date.

Cheryl Brown

Of course this is a copy & paste email. There are inconsistencies – another sure sign you are dealing with a scammer. Since I don’t have a time-machine, I ask:
“6. Delivery date: June 30.”
I won’t be able to deliver the images before June 30, 2019
So I assume this is June 30, 2020 ?
Sorry for the error in delivery date,I’ve just been informed the delivery date has been shifted to Aug 30.Please let me know if you can still deliver .
Regards,
Cheryl Brown
[email protected] Editor (9317160204
This is just too easy – the entire shoot depends on my schedule and happens to be close to me. Just too convenient. So I prod a bit more:
That’s the delivery date.
The actual date of the shoot … is to be determined by me?
And you will arrange for a stylist and hair & makeup and all the models?
And finally the scam is revealed, with the hook to make it more attractive. I can make even more money now!
An agency will provide a male and a female fashion model, makeup and hair stylists. I will send the agency details when I’m sending the contractual agreement. I was just informed the budget for the project has changed a little; it’s now $6,500 (photographer gets $2,400 and $4,100 for the talents). You will be paid $800 upfront plus the talents budget while your balance payment will be paid after sending us proof that the job has been done; usually watermarked images. You will be credited for the photo on our pages and you also have the full licencor right of the images.
Photographers we hire usually take on the responsibilities of coordinating the shoot, date for the shoot, selecting location, and disbursing fees. An advance payment of $4,900 will be issued prior to the shoot; this covers your $800 upfront and fee for talents’ fee payable to their manager.
If you’re comfortable with the above, let us get started. And once I get your response, we will start preparing the contractual agreement but I will still need your full name/Business name (to be written on your payment and contract), phone number, and address to prepare the contract.
Regards,
Cheryl Brown

Summary
There is the scam. They overpay you, and you reimburse the “talents”, which is really the scammer. The money they paid you will be a fraudulent transaction, and the bank will most definitely reverse the payment … and you will be out whatever you paid the “talents” / scammer.
In this way they will reveal themselves if you play along a little bit, feigning interest.
But for the love of everything that is good in the world, don’t fall for it. Don’t let the dollar signs cause you to be careless. There is no tantalizing job opportunity. It’s just you and the scammer.

There is a similar one of these emails going around in my circle but instead of targeting local photographers in the Boston area, the target is DJs and it presents an opportunity to work with Anne Leibowitz on an ad campaign, usually for ASICS, or Puma, or Adidas, etc, complete with photographers, videographers, and other “talent” and so on.
Lots of red flags, but it’s is your typical advance-fee scam.

Another one just came through from “Brymer Productions”. They contacted me initially via text message, with a proper link to that website — which I assume is of a legit photography company.
When replied, asking for more details, they had a typo purposely in the domain name. I assume so that you don’t contact the actual people at “Brymer Productions”.
Here is the scammer’s follow-up email — and note the email address which is meant to fool you. Also note the fee you will have to forward to the “manager” … which is then of course the scammer.

We normally let photographers work with their own team but our client decided to dictate some of the input regarding this shoot. You will still be in charge of the shoot but we are recommending the talents’ team we feel best represent our content. You are permitted to edit or retouch because you will be credited for the images and I’m sure you want the world to see beautiful images linked to you.

If you’re comfortable with the above, please reply with your name (to be written on your payment and contract), phone number, and address.

I received a physical check from Brymer. I wish I knew it was a scam and found this website. I deposited the check yesterday into Chase. Chase now has my account locked and said I have to wait til it enters into my account for them to cancel it. I can not get paid from my day job, they are unable to deposit because my account is locked until the check is “verified”. I contacted the “director” about the check and they instructed me to have Chase cancel the check.
To sum up what happen I was contacted by the number on the website via text message too and they said they found my profile on backstage. Pretty much it was to take photos for a store for their spring collection.
I really wish I did better research. I’m glad Chase is investigating, but its horrible that my account is currently locked.
Checking their website again I noticed on the map its a UK location. I wish there was a way we could report the website to get it down.

I’ve been on the hook with “James” for about a week now – same email. Even made it as far as getting the check in the mail (it’s a fake check) and corresponding with the “talent manager” who goes by “Sam”. I caught on to the phony check (I’d never front money for a job and this whole thing seemed fishy from the start when they refused to have a phone call and googling “PM Consultings” yielded no relevant results)
So I’m going to string them along for a while. I told “James” I deposited the check and that I keep asking “Sam” for email addresses to send the money via Zelle but that they’re “inactive,” and for a couple days they keep sending new bank accounts for wire transfers, new emails for Zelle transfers, and I keep saying they don’t work. Gonna just keep trying to offer them money until things get weird!
14.1.1TH says
Hi, I saw a photography project post on Mandy.com and replied thinking it was legit – got a reply from James Reid asking me to email him at that very same email [email protected] only in my case, fortunately, after one or two emails the domain name must’ve gotten banned (or at least it expired from what I found) so I didn’t fall into that trap. The pmconsultings.com site had some hyperlinks to pdf portfolios of past projects with this other site FYI, though I am only speculating that it may be the same company: http://www.aura-consulting.co.uk
15Jed Williams says
Oh man, I got totally worked by James Reid from PM Consultings, hook..line…and sinker.
I have worked as a commercial director for almost 10 years and just got on Mandy back in December for the first time to keep project opportunities flowing during the holidays. I submitted to his posting and received an email just like Giovanni, Brendan, and TH. I was paying to be on Mandy and saw that they have some great clients on there like Disney, Paramount, and Universal…so instantly my radar was naively not detecting anything sketchy with clientele like that.
When I replied to James he gave me the PM Consultings website, his email, and we talked for 2 weeks about very specific things like deliverables, watermarking the content until the project is complete, color grading aesthetic, camera movement. You name it, he went so far with it that I didn’t even question it based on his industry knowledge. I never got on the phone with him though, he always had no time and business was too demanding. Ughh…stupid me.
So he sent me a cashier’s check for $5800, it instantly went thru to my bank Chase and I sent him $4000 to the “talent manager” through Zelle, and $1000 to “Hair & Makeup” on Zelle. I was on 3 commercial shoots and was so busy, but after 5 days went by we talked some more as we were getting close to shoot date and he needed more budget for the wardrobe so he asked me to send another $1000 through Zelle to his Stylist. He said he would send another cashiers check. I said I didn’t feel comfortable with that.
When I went to check my bank account the bank sent me an alert that said “Fraudulent Check”. My heart sank. I messaged James, I messaged Mandy, I went to my bank…sure enough, I got scammed.
I filed an FBI report, a police report, talked to my bank with literally every dept., talked to Mandy, and there was nothing anyone could do. Especially using Zelle it’s like cash there is no recuperating the funds…I was out $5000 a week before Christmas.
A brutal lesson that I learned and hopefully others can too from my experience. I feel so dumb for falling into the trap, and it is something I look back and see the signs. Just goes to show when you’re not looking for it, it isn’t evident. They went very far to scam me, so please be safe out there.
15.1Sue says
Jed, I am so sorry to hear that they got you! They almost got me too. Currently, I am expecting a “check” in the mail from “Oakville Volkswagen” so that I can hand this over to the Toronto Police Fraud Department. I guess I am still concerned that they have my contact details and my signature on a document (fraudulent contract). Are you also worried about that?
From now on, I am ALWAYS going to do a reverse phone number lookup to see what pops, and have my teenage son (a whiz at catching scams as he did with this one) verify things before I sign anything. In this case, the phone number provided was 858-461-9507, location Del Mar California. I am now doing a more indepth search to find out the true identity of the person associated with that phone number.

I was found over an ad on Kijiji where I am advertising my photography Services..
Huge thanks to Adam, the comment before me for listing that phone number as when I googled it this was the first page that popped up. Fellow Photographers please beware of this scam!! I could have been out a good chunk of change..

I was in the midst of being sucked into this particular scam, too, when my son caught the glitch in the email address. Unfortunately, they now have my address and signature on a fraudulent contract (which I am quite concerned about!). I am awaiting their “check in the mail” so that I can turn everything over to Toronto Police Fraud department. I also am performing an in-depth reverse phone number search to try to discover who “Bryan Seth” truly is.
