Fashion inspired photo session in New York, with the Zeiss ZX1
As another installment on the theme of Two Perspectives, I met up with my friend Tracy Bosworth Page (instagram), while she was on a visit to New York. She had brought along a most interesting camera for her visit -- the very unusual and beautiful Zeiss ZX1 (B&H / Amazon). An additional challenge when photographing dancers in movement, is the exact timing. That fleeting pose in mid-air needs to be captured at the exact moment when their feet, hands and the entire body is positioned in ideal way. Some advice about this was given in a previous article on photographing dancers - tips on photographing dancers and ballerinas - but much of it relies on constantly conferring with the dancer, who will know exactly what they want.

Another series from the recent publicity photo session with the Modern Gypsies, with two of the girls in costume, as golden birds. With costumes this detailed and complex, I wanted a simpler background. One that didn't intrude, and somehow complemented the subjects. Classic architecture!

Lighting for on-location photo sessions - pick your battles
When doing a photo session with a couple on location, I mix up the lighting as needed. Some sequences are shot with shoot available light only; for other sequences I may use off-camera flash with a softbox. Sometimes I use on-camera TTL fill-flash if that helps working faster.
