video clip – photo session with Jen & David

September 11, 2009 Neil vN 13 Comments

photo session with Jen & David

Jennifer and David met up with me on their first anniversary of  their wedding for a photo session in the same place where we had their engagement photo session – Skylands Manor in Ringwood, NJ.  What I really like about the estate grounds is that it offers such a variety of beautiful settings for portrait sessions.  Here is a video clip of the photo session as another glimpse in how I work with my clients and look for opportunities and angles to give my client a variety of images.

Here are a few of the images from the session that were used in this clip.

great work Neil! I saw always your flash on your camera without any modifier… did it flash every time? I mean… do you use always your flash for filling like I read somewhere on your blog between -2 to -3 ev? as always we can’t see the flash… so well balanced. nice job! cheers.

Daniel .. nope, my flash didn’t fire every time. Only when I wanted that touch of fill-flash would I allow the speedlight to give me that kiss of light .. TTL flash at -3EV. (actually, -5 EV with the Nikon D3)

The 2nd image posted here, with the couple sitting against that green backdrop .. you can see in the clip that I had used fill-flash there. I needed to lift the shadows juuuust a touch.

And since I never intended to use my on-camera flash as more than that kiss of light, I used direct flash.

    Hello Neil,

for the very first time I saw you with on camera flash. What was you decision to let your soft boxes at home? Did you use CTO for your flash ?

    Regards from London

Andreas … with this shoot I didn’t use a gel on my flash, even though I have gels stuck to my lens hood at all times.

However, during a previous shoot with the same couple, I did use a 1/2 CTS gel to warm my flash to be closer in color to the light from the setting sun. The link to the page … and here’s the specific image.

Hi Neil! – These videos give me a lot of insight as to what goes on during a photo shoot. I learn more quickly by watching instead of reading. Please please keep posting these videos.

John .. it’s a royalty-free clip that I purchased off Triple Scoop Music. I don’t recall exactly which song it was, but delve around in their site. They have a lot of good tunes.

    Neil,

I’ve figured it out…it’s the instrumental version of According To Me.

    Cheers,
