photographing people - available light portrait
While unloading lighting gear from the van to shoot a last few images for a certain section for my next book, I turned around and noticed the way the light fell on Anelisa. Beautiful portrait light. The (cropped) pull-back shot will show why .. Read more inside...Dance photography – studio lighting with dramatic shadows
Dance photography - studio lighting with dramatic shadows
Jaqlin and I wanted to create photos in the studio that captured the sheer power in her dance movements. It took several tries for me to get her at the peak of her jump. The lighting here is very simple — a single Profoto B1x 500Ws flash (B&H / Amazon), and the Profoto Magnum reflector (B&H / Amazon). With the flash high up on a light-stand in the studio, I wanted it to simulate hard sunlight, with the shadow of Jaqlin, the dancer, being part of the design of the image. The shadow has Read more inside...An occasional muse
An occasional muse
It is exactly 10 years today, March 21, since the first time I photographed Anelisa. She responded to a casting call for someone to model at one of my photography workshops. She had a magical quality and was supremely photogenic ... and since then Anelisa has been my occasional muse. She is usually the first one that I contact when I need a model at a workshop. I posted photographs from that first session in this article - Effective on-location portraits. Over time I have worked with Anelisa numerous times, and she has also appeared on the cover of two of my books: Read more inside...Dramatic studio lighting with the Profoto Spot Small
Dramatic studio lighting with the Profoto Spot Small
For portrait photography, soft, flattering light is easy to work with. You can more easily pose your subject compared to when the light source is small. Also, it is more immediately flattering to you subject. You have to be really specific in how you pose and position your subject when you use a harder / smaller light source. This is true whether you use available light or studio lighting or off-camera lighting. For example, much of what I do with on-camera bounce flash, is to create directional soft light from what starts out as Read more inside...Available light photography – looking for good light
Available light photography - looking for good light
When shooting for fun on location with a model, and have the time, I have this personal challenge - to find interesting sources of light. Those spots of found light where a little bit of magic happens. This photo of Anastasiya was taken in Grand Central, New York. While the station's architecture is impressive, the light levels there are very low, and quite flat. It's a place you want to take photos at, because it is so beautiful inside - but it is a challenge. The light there just don't lend itself to good portraits in an obvious Read more inside...Lighting for on-location headshot photography
Lighting for on-location headshot photography
For headshot photography in New York, where we might roam around, a static setup with light-stands isn't that feasible. It would slow us down from getting a variety of images when we are on the move. For that, I like to keep the lighting setup small and portable. My preference for lighting for on-location headshot photography, is the Profoto B10 flash (B&H / Amazon) coupled with the Profoto OCF Beauty Dish (24") (B&H / Amazon). Here is a pull-back shot to show the lighting setup Read more inside...Lens review: sharpness – Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM vs Sony 85mm f/1.8
Lens review: sharpness - Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM vs Sony 85mm f/1.8
Which is the better choice -- the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM (affiliate) or the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 (affiliate) -- it's a question that comes up regularly in the Sony discussion groups and FB groups. The short answer - you would be very happy with either option. In this review though, we are going to consider the sharpness of both lenses. Best camera settings for off-camera flash
With many of the tutorial articles on this website that deal with off-camera flash photography, I have attempted to make the explanation not only as straight-forward as possible, but also repeatable. When it comes to camera and flash settings, there is often a specific science at work here - a specific method , which should deliver similar results time and again. The artistic side to photography is open to interpretation, and that is what makes photography continually fascinating - there are always further things to explore. However, when it Read more inside...Best photography purchases of 2018
Best photography purchases of 2018
The regular end-of-the-year post about the best (and worst) photography purchases always sparks interest, with many others chiming in on what they bought the past year, whether for fun or professional work. I forever seem to hover between sensible purchases that are necessary to advance ... and just sheer indulgence. Here are some of what I think were my wisest investments ... all the way down to some dubious side-tracked choices. Notably about the gear I purchased, 2018 was the year where I "retooled" somewhat to be able to shoot more video, and Read more inside...- 1
