Kate – a New York photo session
Kate - a photo shoot in New York
Kate is from Ukraine and has a deep fascination for New York. As a present, Kate's sister flew both of them out for a vacation here ... and had me photograph Kate around New York yesterday. The idea was to get a mixture of portraits of Kate and some photos of Kate in obvious New York locales. We started off in the Meat-Packing district because I wanted a photogenic spot that wasn't too crowded during a weekday (in winter), so we could have an easy start to the photo session. Since Kate might not have been experienced with photo shoots, I thought Read more inside...finding (and using) interesting available light
finding (and using) interesting available light
I hope that no one thinks that the flash photography and lighting techniques that I describe on the Tangents blog are only applicable to wedding photography. In a recent post I described where I photographed a model in an alley way when I noticed a splash of sunlight (reflected from a window) falling onto the wall. In recognizing that interesting splash of light, and using it, I got an image which was different than I would've had if I had just used the even shaded light in the alley. I used this very same idea at a recent wedding in Read more inside...fire performer at PDF
After I was so thrilled with watching and photographing the fire performers at their wedding, Katie and Nathan managed to get me a ticket to the PDF event this weekend. Due to work commitments this weekend, I was only able to visit tonight (Friday), and take in the activities and spirit of the event, and chat to random people. Magical. Of the fire performers (and other participants) I photographed, I really liked the few images I got of Nichole .. and thought I'd show them here as a small glimpse of the event. Shot with the Nikon D3, using the Nikon 85mm f1.4D lens 1/125 @ f1.4 @ 3200 Read more inside...

photography: using interesting found light / available light
Photographing Kerri in an alley that I've used a few times before, I was looking for other interesting angles and backgrounds. This one stretch of white-washed wall was particularly bland ... but then I noticed small splashes of light ... Read more inside...photography: direction of light & choice of background
posing your subject - direction of light & choice of background
Reinforcing the ideas from a few previous posts, we're going to look at that intersect where everything comes together: - direction of light, - choice of background, - posing your subject, - positioning yourself. When we work with our subject - whether a family member or a model or anyone we're photographing - then we have the opportunity to control at least a few aspects to make the final photograph more successful. A recent post on using off-camera flash, the question came up about how I work when I'm on my own and don't have an assistant holding up a softbox. Using off-camera lighting does make your options easier in how you position your subject, since it is much easier to have great portrait lighting on your subject. By adding light to your subject with the flash & softbox combination, you have the freedom to be less concerned about perfect light on your subject. When I work on my own, I approach things differently. I now have to not Read more inside...Aisha, the belly-dancer ..
Aisha was the star at a recent party where she performed as a belly-dancer. Through several dance routines, I had the luxury of having enough time to move from just the safe shots, to playing around and getting more diverse images ... Read more inside...
