recap: Photography workshop - Seattle (2009)

And well may you ask what is going on here!? As we were walking back from the session outdoors during the flash photography workshop in Seattle, we still had our off-camera lighting ready - two soft boxes with speed lights. When we bumped into these two characters, we had an impromptu session right there in the hotel lobby. Electronic Arts were holding a Community Day for the video game titled "Army of Two: The 40th Day".  A community Day is when a video game company (such as Electronic Arts) brings in some of their biggest fans, as well  Read more inside...

recap: Photography workshop - Brighton, UK (2009)

I must say I am pretty amazed myself at being able to come to the UK to present workshops, and that there was such interest in having me come over.  So here we are .. the first workshop just took place, and it was in Brighton, the well-known tourist and holiday resort.  As usual, part of the program included working outdoors with softboxes and manual flash .. and for this we went down to the colourful promenade. recap: photography workshop - San Francisco (2009)

The first series of workshops for 2009 took place in California - one workshop in Dana Point, and two workshops in San Francisco.  Having lived a while in the greater Bay Area a number of years ago, it was great to visit San Francisco again.  This just added to the pleasure I had this week of meeting everyone who attended the workshops - and as always, seeing those aha! moments kick in at various times.   Thank you to everyone who made these workshops a success, incl our three gorgeous models. A few images of our  Read more inside...

When the Tangents blog started, more or less

Everything on the Tangents blog is through a steady accumulation of writing on photography. A few articles I wrote for a camera club newsletter in the 1990's became the initial exploratory posts in 2001 on my PlanetNeil website. One of the landmarks was when I started posting a series of articles on PlanetNeil on the topic of flash photography. These became the flagship articles of the website on which the rest was built up. From these articles, my books on flash photography and lighting grew as well. The initial trigger for all this  Read more inside...
