Photography workshops

Photography Workshops in NJ / NYC

I present personal workshops and tutoring sessions which are tailored to your needs and to your schedule. These individual workshops are available as well throughout the year, depending on both of our schedules. My studio is only 17 miles from Manhattan. Just a short hop from New York and quite accessible by bus. Oh, and there's parking at the studio. Free parking. If you are limited in how far you can travel, we can do an online tutoring session via Zoom or Skype, to help you get a much better understanding of photography and lighting  Read more inside...

Teaching a flash photography workshop on a grey day, I was disappointed that it was so overcast and miserable - and that I wouldn’t be able to properly explain how to balance flash with strong sunlight with an actual example - but then the sun popped out! This is part of the adventure of an on-location workshop such as the NYC Photo Walks - you just don't quite know what you'll get on any given day since the environment can change. Techie stuff: Lighting is with the Profoto B1 on a monopod, and the Profoto OCF 24”  Read more inside...

recap: Studio photography workshop NJ / NYC

A small group of people met up with Anelisa and myself in my studio for what turned out to be the first Studio Lighting Workshop of the year. On the drive home afterwards, I decided to add another 2nd date this year, for a workshop on Nov 18th. The format of the workshop depends on it being a small group of people - everyone gets time to photograph our model. But more importantly, everyone gets time to hands-on, adjust the studio lights. In the morning we go through the building blocks of lighting. Short Lighting & Broad Lighting.  Read more inside...

Our model during today's photo walk in NYC - the divine Diana Chesk. Typically for this kind of dramatic light, I under-exposed the available light somewhat, and let the Profoto B1 flash (affiliate) pick up the slack in the exposure. The softbox used here was the Profoto OCF Beauty Dish (24?)  (B&H / Amazon). It's small enough to make it easy to handle when we have to negotiate our way around, yet large enough to give soft-edged light. The rain was coming down as a continual drizzle  Read more inside...

Personal photography workshops & photo walks in NYC - models

When we do a photography workshop on location, what I want to teach and help nurture, is the ability to control our environment when we take portraits outside. We look for interesting and complementary backgrounds, or background which are complementary to our subject. We look for, or create great light for our subject. It's all about the Direction & Quality of Light! We will use interesting 'found light', but what we really concentrate on, is creating flattering light with off-camera flash, or with video  Read more inside...

Las Vegas photography workshops: On-location lighting

Every year when I attend WPPI in Las Vegas, I simultaneously present my own mini-workshops and photo shoot-out with a small group of photographers. This year the workshop was a photo shoot-out at the picturesque Nelson Ghost Town. These events are limited to just small group of photographers. Definitely un-crowded! The format is similar to the Photo Walks in NYC - I bring a Profoto B1 flash, and enough Nikon and Canon TTL controllers for everyone. So the attendees just had to bring your camera and lenses. I changed the format  Read more inside...

A fun addition to the photography workshops that I present, are the occasional Photo Walk in NYC. We roam a small area in New York with a model, and look for interesting views and places as background. There's no lecture style seminar, but I am there to answer any questions about lighting, posing and photography in general. I want these events to be informative and fun ... and for you to get some stunning images. More details about the Photo Walks: We travel light - no need to bring flashed and light-stands and tripods. Just a camera  Read more inside...

flash photography workshop

recap: Photography workshop - Charlotte, NC (2015)

A group of photographers in Charlotte asked if I would like to present a flash photography workshop there. We arranged a really nice venue - The Getty Center, in Rock Hill, SC -  and settled on a date, July 25th (Sat). Everything in place for this, the first workshop away from NJ / NY since the workshop in Amsterdam two years ago. With two models, and a relatively small group of 8 people - just how I prefer the workshop size, we could cover the photography workshop syllabus in a relaxed tempo, and be sure everyone had the  Read more inside...

recap: Boudoir photography workshop - Albany, NY (2015)

Teaming up with Genine Gullickson, one of the best boudoir photographers I know, we co-presented an all-day workshop in Feminine Portraiture and Boudoir Photography. The workshop was held in Genine's studio in Schenectady, NY on May 31st. We had two lovely modes, and two stylists who took care of make-up and hair styling. We had a fun group of 7 photographers who attended this workshop. Genine's place - Clique Studio - is a loft-styled studio offering a variety of backgrounds and settings. (This immediately made the images  Read more inside...

flash photography workshops – New Jersey / NJ

recap: Flash photography workshops – New Jersey / NJ (2015)

The format of the flash photography workshops that I present, are constantly evolving. Gradual changes as I adapt the program to be fluent. Always with the ideal that anyone who attends will see a marked improvement in their understanding and use of flash, and on-location lighting. I wanted to give a glimpse again of one of these workshops - in this case a Personal Workshop attended by two photographers, with Adrienne as our model. The tempo of the workshop is nice and relaxed, giving everyone time to shoot and practice,  Read more inside...
