Thank you to everyone that came out to the presentation at B&H’s Event Space. It was jam-packed! That’s always a big compliment. The photo was on B&H’s Instagram feed, and was taken in the minutes before the presentation started. And no, it’s not my doh! facepalm realization that I’ve forgotten something.
The topic of the presentation was – Direction and Quality of Light – and it is based on the material in my new book. I do think this presentation was solid, and going by the stream of questions, very well received. So Read more inside...
With my daughter, Janine, done with high school and ready to enter university, I thought it might be a great time for a kind of road trip for the two of us. One last time to hang out together before she leaves the house. There was just this small window now in July where both our schedules were open.
When I was in Amsterdam in 1986, I really liked the culture and the laid-back nature of the people here. Of course, it also helped that in being an Afrikaans-speaking South African, I could understand Dutch fairly well. And Read more inside...
It's been a hectic week, flying in to Dublin (Ireland), for two sold-out workshops there over the past weekend. (Sept 17 & 18) Barely any time for sight-seeing, but it's been a fantastic trip over.
In the photo, from left to right: Roz, our one model (an entrant for the Miss Universe competition for Ireland!); myself; Hanna, our other model, (an entrant to Ireland and UK's Next Top Model competition for 2011); Liam Ramsell of Pro Foto Training (host of the workshops); Jesssica, my infamous assistant with a 'tood; and Peter Read more inside...
recap: photography workshop - Jersey City & NYC (2010)
The final workshop for 2010 took place this week - the first day again located in Jersey City, with a spectacular view of Manhattan. The second day had a smaller group of photographers practicing on-location lighting techniques in Manhattan.
This striking image of Catherine, our model at the Monday workshop, was taken as a storm was slowly sweeping in. The background was intentionally under-exposed like this to give a dramatic quality to the final image. The light on her was from a softbox, placed to the camera right, Read more inside...
recap: Presentation at B&H’s Event Space in NYC (2010)
I presented the first of two lectures on flash photography, at the Event Space at B&H ... and, wow! This was all very exciting to me. Some of the biggest names in the photography world have presented talks and seminars at B&H. So for me, this was quite A Big Deal to present a lecture there.Just as exciting was to see that the place was jam-packed. The venue has 65 seats, but in the end I think there were about 75 people inside, with some sitting on the floor in front of me, and some lining the door .. and some 20+ Read more inside...
recap: photography workshop - Jersey City & Manhattan (2010)
As a recap of the two-day long flash photography workshop, here are some images to show you some of the areas we photographed, and used as a backdrop. In the photo above, Aleona iscaught in mid-air during the recent flash photography workshop. As part of an explanation of High-Speed Flash Sync, she patiently vaulted into the air numerous times for everyone who attended the 2nd day of the workshop. As before, the 2nd day is the on-location fun practical segment of the workshop which takes place in Manhattan.

Aleona was one of our striking models at the recent 2-day long flash photography workshop held in Jersey City and New York City. The setting in this photo is the DUMBO area of Brooklyn, with Manhattan in the background. The challenge was to overcome the hard sunlight with a small speedlight ... and still make it look good.
The flash photography workshops have undergone certain changes over time - the material and sequence of material are always honed over time. The biggest recent change is that the workshop has expanded with an Read more inside...
The near-penultimate workshop for this year was held in Atlanta, covering the range of topics relating to flash photography and lighting. As always, it was good to meet and work with a group of people - and then throughout the day, watch and experience everyone's progress in getting more familiar with the subject. Thank you to everyone who attended!
The image above of our model, was taken in the hotel lobby. The wall behind her had an interesting pattern, and I wanted to use that. Even though the lobby had a fair amount of broad Read more inside...
One of the final workshops for 2009, was the one held in Philadelphia in the prestigious Ritz hotel! Working inside the hotel and the surrounding areas, provided us with some stunning backdrops while photographing our models. Still staying with the updated format with the flash photograph workshop, if I am guided by the response by those who attended, then the workshop once again appears to have been a hit. I had a great time as well, and I am sure there will be a few interesting photographs surfacing again. Thank you again to Read more inside...
