available light photo session in the studio - Elle
During the same photo session with Elle where the aim was for Hollywood Glamor lighting style with video lights, I also wanted to change it up completely with an entirely different look and lighting - an available light photo series in the studio. With so much light flooding into the studio, it was just a matter of positioning Elle into the light. To get away from a blank wall, the background was a backdrop. And yes, the studio needs more furniture. We'll revisit this territory with future shoots. But even with such a minimalist Read more inside...review: Litepanels Croma LED video light
review: Litepanels Croma LED video light
What sets Litepanels Croma LED video light (B&H / Amazon) apart from most, is that you can vary the color temperature. You can vary the WB between 3200K and 5600K by dialing a knob. No more need for a gel to be clipped in and out. The gel (or lack of gel) would mean a specific WB with the LitePanels Pro. With the variable adjustment of the Litepanels Croma, you have every color balance setting inbetween. Read more inside...Composition, posing, light & lighting
Composition, posing, light & lighting - when it all comes together
I just love this photograph of Anastasia Z, and want to share some of the through-process in how it came together. To test the Canon 6D camera (affiliate) and the Canon 24-70mm f/4.0L IS lens (affiliate), I met up with Anastasia Z in New York. I scouted this area, while we were waiting for Anastasia who was running a touch late. Just as well I did the scouting earlier on, because it was freezing outside. I saw the way this building over the Highline in Manhattan was creating this jagged Read more inside...Finally, my own studio space!
Finally - my own studio area.
Today has been an exciting day - I signed the lease on a large studio space. I've been sharing studio space the last year, but it's become obvious over time (even before then), that I really, really need my own space. My own studio, and my own office area away from home. And here it is - the studio as it is now. Two iPhone photos just to show what it is. It is huge, and as you can see, lots of window light. And it's just 10 minutes' drive from my home here in New Jersey. I'm obviously very pleased with this. The studio space will hopefully be the Read more inside...Bounce flash portrait & post-processing
Bounce flash portrait & Photoshop retouching technique
When we were done with the studio shoot with Ulorin Vex, we still had a few minutes left, so I thought I could do a bounce flash portrait as well. Just for a comparison of sorts to show that on-camera bounce flash can give interesting results too. Here is the low-key portraits we did with the Profoto set-up. The only semi-interesting background I could find in the studio (that wasn't a white wall), was this grungy green door to one of the store-rooms. I thought it might work as a gritty urban setting. I shot about eight Read more inside...Night-time photo session using off-camera flash
Night-time photo session using off-camera flash
Sarah and Mark were in New York, dressed to the nines, to attend the Rockettes show. And while they were dressed up, and with some time before the show they were attending, we did a photo session. You might remember them as the couple in my book, off-camera flash. I've also photographed Sarah on other occasions. I thought that the New York skyline at dusk would work as a perfect backdrop to how stylish they were dressed. (I did ask Mark if he felt like James Bond, all suited up like that in his tux.) The lighting setup was Read more inside...photo shoot – Modern Gypsies – off-camera flash & controlling the background
photo shoot & off-camera flash - making the background count
I got a call from Michael Saab of the Modern Gypsies to let me know that they were performing in a night-club in Manhattan, and would I be interested in doing some promotional photos for them? Of course! Other photo sessions with the Modern Gypsies were all energizing experiences. (The Modern Gypsies also featured in my book, off-camera flash.) Working with creative people always fuels the creative spark. At the night-club, I looked around for interesting areas I could shoot some portraits. I felt this curving Read more inside...Controlling bright daylight with direct off-camera flash
Controlling bright daylight with direct off-camera flash
Working with Molly K as our model during an personal photography workshop in New York, we put into action the thought-process when using flash in very bright light. There's a specific algorithm that gets us to optimal settings. But, as usual, there's more to a final image than just the numerical settings on the camera ... photography: how good / sharp do your lenses need to be?
Olena, who I photographed during a recent personal photography workshop in New York. camera settings: 1/320 @ f/3.5 @ 800 ISO (available light) I was trying out the new Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 VC (B&H) for the images I shot during this workshop. (It comes in a Canon version too.) It appears to be a fantastic lens. Build quality is good. The feel of it is good. The zoom ring has a nice throw. And it features stabilization! Nice touch. However, shooting other images at wide open aperture, I wasn't sure I was happy Read more inside...- « Previous Page
